Sometimes shopping for a new saddle can be disheartening. Especially if your heart is set on a high end name brand saddle. The prices for these extremely well made saddles can be exorbitant. If this is the case, you may wish to consider buying a name brand used saddle. Often, you can find a high end, barely used saddle at a much lower price than what a less quality new saddle costs.

Let us look at the example of a new Hermes saddle which is considered one of the very best saddles made. It normally retails between $6,000 to $7,200. What is surprising is there are sales of used Hermes saddles, that are in excellent condition (like new), that have sold for less than $1,200. That represents 85% off of retail. These types of deals on used saddles are not difficult to find online.

Where can you find these types of deals? You can find them on online auctions, Craigslist, classified ads, horse forums and other horse topic websites.

Although you can save money by buying a used saddle, it would follow that you should also use a few buying tips:

Examine the saddle thoroughly; check for any obvious defects like how solid the tree is, if there are tears in the leather, damaged stitching, etc. If the saddle is leather, make sure there are no cracks in the leather, and make sure the leather is supple, not dry and brittle. There may be a few scuffs or scratches, yet they should not hinder the worthiness of the saddle.

Examine the saddle for cleanliness, particularly the underneath areas. Many times saddles are cleaned on the “outside,” yet the cleaning may be missed under the skirt or saddle flaps. Although the underneath fleece may have some wear, too much dirt can be unhygienic for your horse.

A high quality used saddle can give you years, even a lifetime of enjoyable use. Most expensive, top brands are extremely well made. If maintained properly, they will last much longer and be more comfortable for you and your horse than a cheap new saddle.

Lance Graves, Jim Warner of Bozo hackamore?

Hello. I am breaking into the horse world and have been leasing a QH gelding for the past 7 months. He rides in a Lance Graves hackamore that does not belong to me. I have been slowly aquiring tack and supplies throughtout the months, and am now ready to buy my own hackamore. I have started riding a Mustang mare who is 5 and has never had her teeth done. While we are getting her mouth back in shape, I am riding her in a hack too. She is responsive to the hack, and if I end up taking her as my own horse I think I may even like to keep her in a hack. Question is, which kind? Is anyone partial to one more than another? I should mention that I will still continue to ride the QH, and would need a hack similar enough to the LG that he is used to. But is the Lance Graves the best for control? Because thats what I need with the Mustang. Also, I have not been able to find the Lance Graves at any tack store, online or in person. Please halp. All opinions are greatly appreciated.

I would not recommend using anything with a rolled or rough noseband, and especially nothing with a chain in the nosepiece. They are extremely harsh and overkill for control. You would never want to fully engage those since you risk fracturing bone. If this one is not enough control, then the horse needs more training to respond to body aids….legs, weight, and seat cues. You really shouldn’t try to control a horse with his mouth or muzzle…..the headgear is meant to be used for light communication, and not as the brakes.
You might also want to consider looking into the Dr. Cook bitless bridle, which is the best bitless choice in my opinion, and from my experience. You can google it and find tons of information if you are interested.
As for needing the same hack you are using now, I don’t think that is probably true if it is harsh. Your horse may respond way better to the more comfortable, less harsh little hack in my link.

I just occurred to me that you might be referring to a bosal, and not a mechanical hack? I did google for Lance Graves and it came up on TheTackstop site, but his bits were no longer available. There were several Jim Warner hackamores available on ebay.
