Strangles is an extremely contagious disease of horses. Outbreaks typically happen when a number of susceptible horses are grouped together. Foals and young horses are typically severely affected during an outbreak.
Strangles can manifest as fever, depression, loss of appetite, discharge from the nose and swollen glands across the throat and lower jaw region that might form abscesses that could burst. Other complications of infection may comprise pneumonia, airway obstructions and abscesses within the gut, and occasionally death.
