When William Robinson acquired the Unicorn Inn of the Lower Hillgate, Stockport on 29 September 1838, he might not have guessed that he was about to establish one of England’s largest breweries of the region. In 1865, he was accompanied by his younger son Frederic and his first customer Mrs.Lamb of the Bridge Inn, Chestergate.

By 1878 William owned two houses and a horse. But by 1890 the number of houses increased to twelve. After his death the business passed into the hands of his wife Emma. Subsequently the company was joined by his sons Frederic, John and Cecil on the 1st January 1926. The bottling facilities started from the new building in 1908. In the following years, due to John’s foresight and vision, the estates grew to a large number by acquisition of buildings and houses. Thus the company grew by leaps and bounds over a century.

Now being administered by the fifth generation successors of Robinson, the company is marching forward successfully by employing traditional brewing methods. Its estate expands over 400 houses starting from northern Cumbria through the North wales, Lake District, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire along with the increase of free trade, whole sale, bottling facility and off trade activity. There are no doubts that Robinsons has a successful future ahead of it.

The phased development of the enterprise has a place in history books as one of the well administered institutions in England. The beers are produced after proper processing and fermentation and then distributed to customers all over the world. Thanks to the bottling facility, the beers have found a permanent place in the shelves of many customers and also in supermarkets. It is quite interesting to note the fact that Robinsons have been using the same brand of yeast from the 1920s. The brewery is of traditional type with towers and is one of its kind. The brewery buildings are still being used in their original capacity which is rare of big companies. The brewery provides casking, bottling, kegging and contract packaging. Bottling is carried out at Bredbury which is located at a short distance from the original Unicorn Brewery.

are there any stores that anyone knows of that i could order from. i just signed a lease on one heck of a big draft, and i’d like to be able to have my own tack and accessories that would fit him. so if anyone knows a place (or has a link) where i can look at saddles, girths, bridles, halters etc. that would be awesome =]
