Although they were specifically bred to pull a plow or a carriage, you may be surprised to find that large draft horses can be ridden as well! Draft horses are known for their heavy build and impressive strength, but this does not work against them at all when it comes to riding for pleasure or even for competition. Many draft horses are used in trail riding and with proper training, they do very well in dressage competition as well. Despite their large size, they can move very lightly and be very responsive to signals from their rider. It is generally believed that with the right training, any draft horse may be ridden, although their larger girth can be a little uncomfortable for a rider who is not used to them.

Older Small horse Beginner Novice Eventing?

So, I just asked what you thought about a pony eventing BN. What about this horse. He’s 14.3, 15 years old, and used to be a hunter jumper. The owner was told he’s a quarter pony, but be has the body of a TB and the face of an Irish Draught. She said he jump very well. He was just injured pretty badly today. His muscle skin and muscle were cut. It required stitches. It where the girth goes so he won’t be ridden for a few months. It won’t affect him after it’s healed up, but anyway. What your opinion on that. I’m have lots of experience when it comes to young horses, but I can’t tell with theses old and /or small guys. He;s very sweet, and I’m sure he float around the dressage ring and over jumps. Thanks, no rude answers please!

I haven’t seen your pony question, but either horse/pony should be able to do beginner novice. I’ve done it on a 12.3hh pony, and I know of several other ponies and small horses that do quite well. My first horse was 14.2hh and I evented her through Training level.

I can’t really give an opinion on the stitches since I can’t see what it’s like now. If it heals with lots of scar tissue, it might continue to be sensitive for him.
