Horseback riding has grown as a long time favourite sport, and has just recently begun to become popular not just in the USA but all over the world, which is why using the correct rein contact is so important in riding. A rider’s hands needs to guide, encourage – with a little give and take without being hard or too strong. This is something riders should try. Nervous riders

It will not matter if you are not an expert at horse riding, because there is always a skilled rider who will be available to give a few horse riding tips to those who are completely inexperienced, but who want the thrill of riding and owning their own horse(s). As a learner, you may be afraid of being run away with the faster gaits; jumping can also cause you to become preoccupied with keeping the horse down to a reasonable speed for control, rather than developing fluidity and freedom. This can cause a nervous rider to pull on the reins subconsciously. There is also the fear of falling off, and this fear can be transmitted to the horse, often resulting in the horse refusing. Under a nervous rider, a galloping horse will go faster, generally, because it senses the lack of control. The horse will get nervous itself, and will do what most frightened horses do – run away!

What You can do

Consider your abilities and genuine fears. You want to ride a horse and be professional like a Pro. You want to learn dressage riding – the set series of movements performed by dressage riders. There is no need to struggle on your own, without help, as this could result in you or the horse getting injured. Ride more suitable mounts under good instruction until you are more competent and confident. Get good quality help and instruction from people who have years of experience and know. Ride at a slow pace that you are happy with under instruction, from an understanding instructor. Once you follow the instructions and are confident you can progress on to the faster gaits.

You need to understand, through a good teacher, exactly what you are doing to stop the horse. You may badly want to do something, but are afraid of doing it, such as jumping or cantering or having a gallop in a wide, open space. You may be pulling back on the reins unconsciously, clinging and gripping – pulling back with your body? The epitome of fear could be the “foetal crouch”, which you may be unaware of doing.

What is my horse good for?

My friend bought me a Tennessee Walking horse to train in dressage, jumping, ect. I have no clue about the training of a Walking horse, so can i train him normally, like other horses? Supposedly when you pull back on him, he goes faster, but when i rode him that wasn’t true. He has the 3 normal gaits, along with the gaited horse gates. Can i enter him in normal dressage tests when hes finished training? Id also like some helpful info on walking horses

Yes, i agree with that too. I would never jump a horse without basic dressage. Most Olympic jumpers are trained till 3rd or 4th level until they start to take a fence. They need collection to jump a 5 ft fence! Ill try to get a better picture asap.

I would suggest you do some research on the walkers and find someone who is familiar with them to learn more about them. They are really nice horses but the thing you have to keep in mind is that they are built to move out and walk. They are not built to work tight circles alot and they are not a lopping horse. If you spend alot of time cantering in circles for example you can cause hip problems. So just keep that in mind when you are schooling your horse.

Easy Rider, You must not get what I am saying at all. Actually, my info is correct it is not outdated. It is the facts. You can definitely use a walker for versatility, my husband was supreme versatility champion on a walker. But you do need to keep in mind the physical make up and ability when training for any event. So, I am not saying you cannot use a walker for dressage or jumping what I am saying is to take into consideration their differences and physical ability when training for such events. Every breed is bred for a certain task and they can dominate the desired field over other breeds. The links your have shown are showing what a walking horse can really excel at like that trail Competition. But when the poster is asking a question in regards to training a walker verses a trotting horse there is a difference. But yes, they are great horses I really enjoy them.

Easy Rider, yes lots of lopping in tight circles can cause hip problems in any horse I agree. That is what I ment in reference to the hip issues. And Walkers can do anything you train them to do. I guess my answer didn’t come accross as I intended it to. Sorry about that. That is a shame that they are allowing dressage classes for the walkers that ask for the trot. You might as well get a trotting horse in my opinion. My husband never said they cannot canter, in fact they can. You just have to take a different approach to cantering to develop a good one more so than in a trotting horse. So anyways, that is what I ment with the whole thing. They are great horses. But what do I know I like my Arabs. Good Luck with your Critters.
