Horse Rugs Looking At Types And Purposes

Numerous kinds of horse rugs are available with a variety of different uses. Some rugs are for when a horse is working, some when it is not being ridden, rugs for use inside, rugs for use outside, lightweight rugs, waterproof rugs, heavyweight rugs. The use of the rug determines its weight, materials used, thickness and other properties.

Most horse rugs are designed for wearing when the horse is stabled or pastured, but there are a few which are used when a horse is working or being ridden. Saddle blankets provide cushioning against a heavy saddle and warmth when needed. Extra warmth can be gained by wearing the larger quarter sheet which also covers the rump of the horse.

For outdoor use, there are several different types of horse rug available. Which is used depends on the weather, the temperature and other potential threats to the horse, like flies or dust.

The summer blanket is the lightest outdoor horse rug and keeps the horse clean while offering some protection from flies and other pests. Some may be water resistant or at least shower proof.

The lightweight turnout blanket is used for horses turned out during the spring and early autumn, where the animal may need some protection for morning and evenings chills. If necessary, water proof fabrics are used in the manufacture of some. They are quite light so can be used during summer months as fly or shower protection.

Thicker and denser turnout rugs provide protection and warmth for horses pastured in cold weather. Usually made of breathable waterproof fabrics, some have different pieces so they can be altered to suit the conditions at the time. There is also a heavy, thick canvas rug called the New Zealand rug. This is waxed for shower protection and can be re-waxed.

Fly sheets provide a barrier against flies and other attacking pests, useful where this is a specific problem for the horse. They may have a mask or hood which protects the neck and head of the horse as well as covering more of the body than most other rugs.

When being kept indoors a stable rug can be worn. Some are thicker and warmer for the winter whilst a light stable rug can protect from flies and pests when the horse is stabled.

Horse rugs can be designed with a very precise purpose or have a more general use. A fleece rug or blanket can have many uses: it can be used in place of a cooler rug, a travel rug, a stable rug or as an extra layer under a turnout rug. A mantle or cooler rug is specifically made to be used as a cover allowing a wet or sweaty horse to dry out more slowly while not letting it to cool too quickly.

When being transported, horses are liable to slight knocks and bumps and may be bother by flies, pests, dust and dirt. A specifically designed travel rug may be used, although sometimes a fleece rug, a cooler or a light blanket may substitute.

The safety and health of a horse can be maintained by using the right horse rugs for the conditions. A horse owner is wise to ensure that have all kinds of rug that their horse may need.

Ive been having to blanket my horse in the winter and he loves to run and play in the snow. Does anybody have any brands that are good and will last a while and not rip easily?
