Helping your horse over the jump means sitting in a balanced position that allows the horse to shift body weight and follow through the natural flow of movement to create a beautiful, arching jump. Unfortunately many riders actually hinder their horse’s ability to take those jumps, resulting in poor performance and greater rider frustration.

The base or the position that the rider is in using their legs and body for balance is critical to allowing the horse to take the jump. Ideally the rider should be in the classic two point position with the knee slightly bent and the back of the leg long down to a heel that is deep and in towards the horse. The rider should be able to imagine his or her weight extending down from the heel to the ground, providing the right weight distribution for balance. The stirrup should be on the ball of the foot, not back towards the arch. The toe should also be slightly pointing outwards, allowing maximum contact with the knee and legs over the girth.

The rider’s hips should be well up and the buttocks off the saddle, with the back just slightly convex or roached but never arched as this is both unbalanced and forces the rider’s weight to be carried more to the front. The arms and shoulders should be relaxed and controlled, not flapping or extended to provide additional support and balance. In addition the elbows should be in towards the body, parallel with the line of the horse’s neck. The arms and hands will be positioned slightly differently depending on the type of release.

Crest releases will have the body and arms extended farther over the horse’s neck, up about halfway or slightly less between the poll and the withers. With an automatic release the hands will be wider on either side of the neck and the hands will not make direct contact with the horse. The rider will balance all of his or her weight entirely through the legs and base, which takes a lot of skill, leg strength and balance.

Improving your base is always a challenge. Horse gymnastics allows you to really get a feel for the mechanics of a jump and how your balance changes with the horse’s movements is an excellent place to start. Practicing posting in a strong two point position without dropping into a three point is also a great training activity. It is essential to never use the reins or contact with the horse through the hands as a way to balance, it is all about building up your legs.

Another great way to develop strong legs for the perfect base is to ride without stirrups. Being able to move your body without using the weight distributed through the balls of your feet is strenuous and challenging, but you will become a strong, balanced and confident rider through this type of practice. Working your horse over gymnastic routines and groundrails is an excellent way to build skills as well as gain confidence.
