There are a number of items that are considered equestrian horse tack, including the breastplates, bridle, girth, halter, harnesses, lead ropes, martingale, saddle pad, and stirrup. However, the saddle represents probably the largest and most expensive tack investment you will make.

Purchasing a used dressage saddle will greatly reduce the amount you will have to invest and will usually allow you to have a better quality item than you could probably afford if you were limited to purchasing only new items. There are however, things you should keep in mind if you are going this route.

Do your homework. Decide in advance the maker and model names of the saddle you would like to have. Check forums and blogs for the opinions of others who have or have had the make and model saddle you are interested in. Talk to friends and acquaintances who might know something about the saddles you like.

Get the information you need. Once you begin your search, you will want to know the age, condition, flap length, seat size, tree size, and any other special features about the saddles you find. If a seller does not provide this information, move on to another saddle. If you are purchasing online, you will want pictures of the saddle from every conceivable angle.

Compare pricing. There are lots of saddles available for purchase. The seller needs buyers more than the buyer needs any one seller. So the pressure should be on the seller to provide the information you need to make your decision and to have his saddle priced competitively. If you are bidding online for a saddle, make sure the seller has a rating of 98-99% and has a number of past auctions.

Where to get tack and how do I choose?

I’m going to be getting a horse soon. ( I have one in mind, and he has a prominent back bone, and highish withers.) And I have a low-end budget for tack. I would buy on-line, but fit is important, and I would rather try before i buy. The saddle should be under $700 (western), used might be ok. and I have $200 for the bridle, accessories, etc. Where should I look, how should I buy, and do you have any tips for me?
Is there any way to try it on the horse before I buy? I need it to fit him well. the saddle I have now rubs and pinches his whithers.
Also, is it a reasonable price range? What are good brands?

I would still go with ebay because you can get a better saddle (used) with what you have for money. High withers and protruding backbone means that you’d probably have to go with a semi Quarter Horse tree (A frames are really rare nowadays) and a channel pad (A saddle pad that has padding on the sides but nothing but material in the center so that it raises the saddle up on the sides so that it doesn’t hit the withers or back bone.
