Saddles are amazingly durable and can last many, many years with proper care and maintenance. Technically speaking, it would be best to clean a saddle each time it is used although some riders do just fine with less frequent cleanings when their style of riding does not expose the saddle to a full dose of dirt, sweat, and mud. Whichever the case, any saddle should be cleaned periodically and it certainly makes sense to do a full cleaning and dressing prior to any long term storage, before a big show, or before offering it for sale. Our guide will also help if your stored saddle has managed to pick up a bit of mold (No worries, it’s not a big deal. Some actually consider this a sign of healthy leather!).
To get started, there are a few tools of the trade you should have available:
- - Saddle Soap (be wary of one-step cleaner and conditioner, the detergents contained in many of these can damage your leather)
- - Leather Conditioner/Grease (some conditioners will darken the leather, if this is not what you want then choose your conditioner accordingly and test it in an inconspicuous place)
- - Metal Cleaner (optional)
- - Sponge
- - A few Small Towels
- - A Bowl of Water
- - Q-Tips
The first step is to remove all fittings from the saddle to make the leather easier to clean. Once the saddle is bare, dampen a towel in your bowel of water and wipe any loose dirt, hair, and grime off of the saddle.
Now it is time to really get to cleaning. Dampen your sponge in your bowl of water, not too wet though, you don’t want to soak your leather. Dip the dampened sponge in saddle soap and work it into a lather. Working in small circles, thoroughly clean the top, underside, and between the flaps. You should not apply soap to any part of the saddle that is suede. Wipe the saddle down with another damp towel taking care to remove all soap leftover from the cleaning, particularly in the crevices and folds where it could help trap dirt. This is a great place to use some Q-Tips to reach into the tighter areas. Once all the soap has been removed it is time to wipe the saddle dry.
With the leather still slightly damp from being wiped dry, apply the leather conditioner. Apply sparingly as you do not want to clog the leather’s pores or trap dirt, if you really go overboard it could soak through the leather into the padding or the tree, damaging the saddle. If after allowing ample time to dry and absorb the saddle feels oily, you have applied too much conditioner. Just wipe the excess off with a dry towel and use a bit less next time. We have also found that the conditioner is absorbed much easily when applied in a warm place.
Now that the leather is cleaned up and dressed, your saddle should be starting to look pretty good. To finish up the job we need to get the metal looking as good as the leather. Start by wiping off any excess saddle soap or conditioner. Clean the stirrup leather in the same way as the saddle. The metal stirrups can be cleaned with a metal cleaner, saddle soap, or regular dish soap. If you do use a metal cleaner, take care that it does not come in contact with any leather pieces. Now that everything is clean and dressed, reassemble all of the parts that were removed for cleaning and enjoy your nice clean saddle.

Should I blanket my horse?
I live in Southern California and own a 20 year old thoroughbred gelding. As a thoroughbred, he is always on the thin side. He is fed plenty throughout the day, 2 8-10lb alfalfa flakes, 5lbs safe choice, 6lbs beet pulp, 2lbs rice bran and 10lbs alfalfa pellets. He looks great right now, but I worry if I don’t blanket him he could go thin.
He boards in a facility across town, so blanketing him is not the most convenient, as I can not be there in the morning to remove his blanket. It is 50 degrees right now (8:30pm) and I am cold, but I know not to judge my temp to my horse. I checked on him earlier and he seemed just fine.
Those I have spoken to say I don’t need to blanket him unless it is rainy and cold (rare occurrence here). So, at what temperature should I throw a blanket on him (if ever)? Do horses in Southern Cal (specifically Carlsbad) need blanketing?
Thank you for your help.
Concerned owner.
NOOOo good grief do not do that.
