Blanketing my horse after riding?

I live in South Dakota. I have never used blankets on my horses, but I am going to be taking lessons for barrel racing this winter and hauling my horse in a stock trailer with open sides to and from the lessons. I have been told that I should use a fleece cooler and keep that on for a few (5-10) minutes, then put on a canvas turnout blanket… is this correct? I am not familiar at all with what types of blankets I should buy for this purpose. I do not plan on putting it on my horse while he is in the pasture, only for after riding, unless wearing it while turned out is necessary…? Thanks for the help!

No matter where you live, hauling a horse after an activity, depends on many things as well as local conditions.

The best way to know when you will need to blanket them is to consider the temps outside and the activity he has had. The best way to transport a horse at any time of year is to make sure he is dry and comfortable. IF that is not possible then do what you must to make it possible.

If he is dry but you know it is very cold out and the wind chill will be hard on him/her, then do what you can to take the wind chill off of the horse.

If he/she is wet, use what you need to get him/her dry before transporting. This is very important with an open trailer.

The most important part of it all is to make sure your horse does not get cold.

Keeping the blanket on him while in pasture should not be necessary unless he is going straight from the trailer to the pasture and has not been dried or checked for cold. I would not want him getting use to having the blanket on all the time in pasture as it will keep his winter coat from coming in as thick as it should.
