Anyone who has the money and wants to buy horses is a seller’s dream right now. When the economy gets tight, breeders and owners feel the pinch immediately, and prices drop. A lot of horses will end up being given to good homes in order to avoid having to take them to auction; however be careful when accepting a free animal. He could have a health problem or other issue that will prevent you from using him in the way that you need. Alternatively, he could end up being the best horse you’ve ever owned! Just try to evaluate him objectively, keeping your heart out of it.

The first place to look for a good deal on a horse is the Internet. Websites like Craigslist and horse-classifieds.com are great resources that will help you find a decent horse for a fantastic price. It’s really tough to go to an auction to buy a horse. The really difficult thing is to go home without all the animals you see there! Additionally, you won’t get any opportunity to thoroughly evaluate them before purchase, so it’s quite a gamble.

One option to consider is leasing a horse before buying it. Many owners are not prepared to sell their equine companions just yet, but need help with the expenses. Once you’ve leased the horse for a while and you’re positive it’s the horse for you, the owner feels more comfortable with letting you have him. Some owners may even offer to give you the horse, or accept a very low price because they know the horse is going to a good home.

How much do Horse Haulers cost?

i dont think i worded the question right but oh well.
im moving my horse from California (near Palm Springs) to Artesia, New Mexico.
and i found a hauler to do it for $650.
im not sure if thats good or not, i mean it sounds good, and my friends have used these haulers and has nothing but great things to say.
just never had a horse hauled by someone else, and i dont know whats a good price.
oh and here in palm springs the lowest it gets here in the winter is 30 degrees in the middle of the night.
and in Artesia it snows and is just really really cold.
can i still ride her?
how should i accomidate her needs?
(shes going to be inside a barn)
and i have a nice winter blanket for her.

I can’t help you on the cost issue, but I am from Kentucky and know how to take care of the horse issue. You should make sure she has a light blanket to wear on the trailer and a warm blanket for when she gets to Artesia. The trailer could get steamy hot inside but could also be drafty. I definately would not put a heavy blanket on her if it is an enclosed trailer. You can still ride her but I would give her a while to acclimate to the air. The only other thing I can think of is maybe to have her oiled by your vet. A mixture of mineral oil and water would be tubed to her stomach. This will keep her stool loose as horses not used to hauling can become impacted and colicky. It also wouldn’t hurt to through in some electrolytes. You can usually buy those prepackaged at an equine supply store. If the weather is sunny and decent, turn her out with the light blanket so she can grow her coat out and stay warm on her own unless you want a short haircoat on her, then you can leave the warm blanket on her till spring.
