Usually, the purchase of a Western Saddle is a significant investment. Most saddle owners take pride in the saddles they own and treat them with respect. In some cases, saddles become family heirlooms and are handed down from generation to generation. A little bit of effort to care for a saddle can help make it more comfortable and extend its life.

The following are some tips for caring for your saddle:

o Do not store saddles in plastic bags or other air tight containers.

o Keep it clean.

o Wet or damp saddles should be air dried naturally away from sources of heat.

o Oil or condition your saddle with light oil. Do not use waxes, silicone, or other preparations that prevent the leather from breathing. Regularly recondition your saddle to prevent it from drying out and cracking.

o Protect your saddle from mildew or excessive humidity.

o Never use household chemicals to clean leather. Avoid chemicals that contain alcohol, turpentine, or mineral spirits. Also, using mink or animals fats will darken leather and can turn rancid, causing the stitching and leather to rot.

how to calm a nervous horse?

so i ride this mare, she’s not mine but she was abandoned at the place i’ve been riding at almost all my life! anyway, she is always nervous. when you take her up, she always moves away. (note: there are no stalls at this place, as it is an arena in her backyard. we tie the horses up, on string, in the arena.) so she just fidgets back and forth while you put the saddle blanket, and saddle on. also when i get on she walks off, pretty sure this is just a habit though, & yes i make her back up and stand where she should.

but the main part of this, she gets verrrrrry frisky because of nerves. she always stresses, and it’s sad because she’s great at jumping and dressage, but she just gets sooo nervous.

any ideas to calm her ?
just hoping to get more hints..

btw; i do alot of half halts on her. and make her go from trot to halt, and visa versa to make her pay attention…

I assuming that you do have permission to ride this mare, correct? If so, I would create a sort of round pen, even if I had to string rope around, just to make a smaller area to work with her. Start over, no matter how long you have been riding her, and teach her some fundementals that she has missed along the way…one being WHOA! It can be readily taught from the ground, do some ground driving, etc. Usually when a horse is nervous and high strung, it’s because they don’t have the confidence in their rider that they should to begin with, so go back to the basics, be consistent and give her that confidence before taking her out into open spaces. You shouldn’t have to make her back up after she has walked off with you…she shouldn’t be allowed to walk off at all while you are mounting and until you give her the signal to walk off. If you have to, get someone to hold her while you get mounted and situated, then take control of her and make her stand until you decide it is time to walk…maybe in 5 or even 10 minutes later…she will get the point.
