If you think saddle fit is not important then ask your vet. Of all the equestrian tack, the proper saddle fit is most important to the health and safety of the horse. Please note, proper fit must be done by a professional, this article attempts to cover some of the issues that can result in a bad fitting and the importance of using a professional saddle fitter for this task.

Saddles are designed for the comfort and protection of the horse as well as the rider. Proper saddle fit is essential and mandatory for the health of the horse. If the saddle is not fitted correctly, it can cause serious harm to your horse. It can cause back problems, tissue and ligament damage and can have an effect on the way the horse moves. Improperly fitting saddles can also cause skin damage, sores and damage to the withers. They can cause permanent muscle and bone damage as well. All of this equates to your horse being in a lot of pain and possibly permanent injury all because of a bad-fitting saddle.

Behavior

Most of the time, horses will “tell” you if the saddle does not fit correctly. The following are queues:

• Opposition to being saddled
• Tail swatting
• Aversion to being brushed
• Can’t relax under saddle
• Has white spots on his back or under the saddle
• Ears pinned back
• Bucking
• Resistance to work and train
• Stumbling

Positioning

For example if the saddle is too long or sits too far back, and the back of the saddle is sitting on the lumbar area; it puts pressure on the lower back. Lower back stress and strain can cause spinal damage. On the other hand, if the saddle is too far forward or cuts into the shoulders, the saddle will restrict the horse’s range of motion thereby restricting his movement and causing sores.

Another important factor in saddle fit is the width of the gullet. This is the channel that runs underneath the saddle from front to back. It is vital that the saddle NOT sit on the horse’s spine. With this equestrian tack, there should be obvious spinal clearance when looking through the saddle from front to back or back to front.

Most professional saddle fitters will tell you that in most cases, additional equestrian tack such as breast straps and cruppers are not needed if the saddle fits properly.

Horses Body Changes

Check the saddle for fit on a regular basis. A horse changes its shape throughout its lifetime. It will require new saddles/fittings to accommodate the new shape.

Note that it is important to have your horse fitted for equestrian tack by a professional saddle fitter. After the horse is fitted appropriately, the rider needs to be fitted as well, with full seat breeches on – more on that in a later article. A professional saddle fitter will be well worth it to insure yours and your horse’s health because one size does not fit all.

He’s already broken, as far as being ridden, but hes not saddle broken. He lets me put anything on his back, except for the saddle and the saddle blanket. I already put the saddle on him once and he totally flipped out, he went haywire, and I was scared so I took it off immediately. Since then he wont let me get near him with it. How can I start to get him used to it?

I put the saddle in the middle of the round pen and let my mare in with it. She could go by it or not. After about 15 minutes I went in and haltered her and led her over by it and let her smell it. Then I picked it up and carried it around by her, brushing her sides with it and letting her smell it more. I did the same with the pad. After she seemed really bored with me, like “is this all there is?” I slipped the pad on her back. On off on off on off. Then it stayed on and we moved around alot with it on. Then the saddle, on off on off on off then on and more walking. Then off. Good girl !! We did this for several days in a row. Now the saddle is no big deal.
