The well-honed senses of the Arabian may be sharper than other breeds and they are definitely more refined than ours. If we understand their sense of sight, smell, hearing, and touch we will be able to more effectively handle these beautiful horses.

The most important rule in handling an Arabian is to treat them with patience and a gentle hand. Much like a parent should treat a small child. Even though they are highly intelligent and sensitive, they may not always understand what you are asking of them, so careful and patient handling will be best.

Sense of Sight

Horses have outstanding peripheral (side) vision, but the placement of their eyes towards the sides of their heads limits their field of vision. It is almost impossible for them to see directly in front of or behind themselves. You will startle a horse if you approach it directly from the front or the rear.

The Arabians eyes are more widely spaced than those of more narrow headed breeds. This improves their side and rear vision, but may further limit their forward vision. A horses eyes change focus slowly, so moving objects will startle them. Approaching a horse too quickly will also cause it to become startled.

Horses might be partially color blind, but they do appear to be able to discern the primary colors. Their night vision is excellent. This may help them avoid nasty nighttime predators.

Sense of Smell

A horse uses its sense of smell to help him find water and to help him decide if his food is appetizing or not. Horses also use their sense of smell to identify people and other animals by their unique scents. The widely flared nostrils of the Arabian allow a much larger intake of air than most horse breeds. This larger intake of air may give the Arabian a sharper sense of smell.

Sense of Hearing

Horses are able to hear higher and lower tones than people can. Loud noises can damage a horses hearing just like they can ruin our hearing. The Arabian’s busy ears move towards sounds and can move together or independently. Because horses can hear things we can’t, we should be more ‘tuned in’ to them. If your horse won’t go somewhere you want it to, they may hear something you don’t.

Sense of Touch

How can a horse touch things without hands? They use their lips to feel things! The Arabian horse’s lips are thin and sensitive. He uses his muzzle and lips to examine unknown things. The long hairs on their muzzle help them judge the distance between objects. Arabians are intelligent and curious, so you will often see their lips busily touching or biting objects to explore them.

Most Arabians greatly enjoy being petted, groomed, and gently scratched. Their heads are especially sensitive, so you should take care not to handle their face in a rough manner. The nerves in the Arabian’s thin skin relay even the tiniest of sensations. Because of this, the Arabian will respond to light cues from his rider.

Knowing your Arabian

Once you know how your Arabian observes and responds to the world around him, you will be able to customize his care and handling. Encourage him to use his sharp senses to explore new objects.

All horses will sense any fear or uncertainty you may have while handling them. If you assume a calm and matter of fact approach it will help reassure your animal. A moderate pace is best when working with horses. Movements that are too fast may ‘spook’ your horse, while moving too slowly may irritate your intelligent friend.

Remember that the Arabian’s senses are super sharp. If your Arabian seems overly excited or fearful for no apparent reason, it could be sensing things you can’t. Stay in tune with your horse and heed the warnings it is trying to give you.

Where can I find cheap neon saddle blankets that are thin?

I need to find thin saddle blankets in neon green and neon orange. Price needs to be reasonable. Online stores are nice. I have thicker blankets for under it. I am taking up barrel racing, and not able to afford $100 blanket, so I found it way more economical to take the ones I have that work great and make em look good with a thin blanket. That way I can change colors. Me and my friend are doing this together so we need to be able to switch are colors easily. So we can match are horses we choose to use.
