It is important that we treat our horses in a way that is appropriate to their nature, if we wish to get the best out of them. It is important to be consistent in how we treat them and how we work with them. In any interaction with our equine friends, they should be in a space where they feel comfortable and happy. If you understand how their mind works, the activities and ground training exercises you do with your horse will be so much more effective. Horse groundwork is essential to overcome some of the deeply rooted instinctual behavior in horses.

The first main point to consider is that the horse is a herd animal. The ancient horse lived wild in free hunting grounds. They were the prey, hence living in a herd offered them protection and safety. The instincts and reflexes from ancient times remain in their behavior and traits today.

In every herd there is a strict hierarchy. At the top of the hierarchy is the herd leader. The herd leader has the immense task of always being alert. He, or she, must know when danger is approaching and decides where to run to to get away from the danger. The leader also defends the herd by intervening personally against the perceived threat.

The herd leader basically has the say on all matters “herd related”. They can decide if someone should be ousted from the herd or feeding grounds. All of the other horses in the herd naturally fall into rank behind the leader. The horses within the herd trust and respect their leader in the fullest extent.

The second main point is that the horse is a flight animal. As already stated, the horse has always been preyed on. In order to survive, they had to run first, and think later to avoid being eaten. This ancient and deeply rooted flight instinct can be very hard to overcome when working with horses as it is so thoroughly ingrained.

A horse handler or rider should be aware that their large animal friend can, in the blink of an eye, become amazingly swift and agile when it is time to escape from a perceived danger such as a paper bag or umbrella. You must be always aware of this flight response so that you are able to deal with it.

How can your horse trust you so implicitly that it will follow you into situations that it personally deems dangerous? Well, if we go back to the way the horse thinks in the herd, who do they trust in dangerous situations? Their herd leader of course.

In order to control the deeply rooted flight instinct of the horse, and to ensure that you and anyone else who handles your horse are always safe, you must become the herd leader. When you are the herd leader, you gain the trust and respect of the horse.

If you can see the world through the horse’s eyes, and understand how the horse thinks, and why they react and do the things they do, you can utilize this knowledge to better your relationship with your equine friend. Regular groundwork training will only be effective if you conduct it knowing how the relationships of the horse within their herd, and understanding the instinct of the flight response.

Good horse ground work, done with these points in mind, will help you establish yourself as the leader of the herd. The position you need to be in to ensure not only your safety, but also that you can enjoy your relationship with your horse to the absolute fullest.
