Described, variously, as the perfect fusion of poetry and garage band rock and roll (the original concept was “rock and Rimbaud”), Horses belongs as much to the world of literary and cultural criticism as it does to the realm of musicology. In the past collectors have found that comic books have certainly come a long way and are valuable collector items. Every person in every walk of life has enjoyed them at some time in their life and collectors are more than willing to add one of these collectible works of art to their collection.

They may be seen as simply a form of childish entertainment to some, but to a collector they are sophisticated works of art that can be extremely valuable. In fact, the first appearances of renowned heroes like Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman could actually purchase a million dollar home. When building a collection of them the collector needs to decide what is their actual motivation for collecting and what are the top comic books. Also a collector needs to decide if they plan to purchase comic books as an investment and then plan to resell them later on, or are they purchasing them as a hobby strictly and for recreational reading.

Some collectors enjoy collecting them for the entertainment they can bring, but they have no desire what so ever of reselling them. Collectors need to determine exactly how much time and money they plan to put into their collection, not to mention how much effort. Today comic books are released on a weekly basis with just about every title having issues that are released once a month, which means at least twelve issues per year. They can be purchased at bookstores, grocery stores, specialty shops, and even on-line.

However, a local store is the best possible source due to the salespeople here being much more knowledgeable and being able to assist you with any question about them that you may have. Those stores will also have whatever a collector will need for storing their valuable comic books. They normally carry a wide array of older issues of in addition to the newer ones and even graphic novels, which are comics that have been bound in a magazine or book form.

Just as in the case of any other collectible, collectors should choose the type of comic book that is right for them, especially since they come in a wide variety of subjects and styles. They come in action adventure, comedy, mystery, horror, science fiction, fantasy, and religious, so it really does not matter what type of stories you are interested in there is one out there for every collector. There are also many publishing companies that will publish comic book with the largest two and the most successful being MARVEL Comics and DC Comics.

MARVEL Comics publishes such characters as Spider Man, The Hulk, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and even Captain America, while DC Comics has published such incredible characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Justice League. Another publisher of comic books is Dark Horse Comics, which has published such fine works as Star Wars, Aliens, and the Terminator. Other publishing companies that publish comics include Image Comics, Top Cow Productions, Inc., Fantagraphics Books, Oni Press and Dynamite Entertainment are only just a few.

Tips for a new author?

Hello!
I have just decided to write my first book, and I have a few questions.

What the book is about:
My book is about a girl who’s parents, brother and sister die in an accident. She has no other relatives except for a half brother who lives in another country.
She is adopted by her horse-riding instructor and then has a hard life.

Q1. Do you have any tips on how to write a good story?

Q2. How do I go about publishing my book?

Q3. How many pages should my book be?

Q4. How big should I make my writing (on the computer)?

Q5. How much does it cost to get a book published?

Q6. How old do you have to be to get a book published?

Sorry that there’s alot of questions!

1. To me, writing is not writing. It’s stringing a bunch of words together to form a plot worthwhile. ( I’m not bashing writing. Writing is all I do ;] ) so, you need a plot; a beginning, middle, and an end. You need a conflict that the character has to overcome.

Beginning: You need a hook to capture the reader. First off, how do you write? are you very descriptive? Or are you not so detailed? A descriptive writer writes stories for people who like descriptive writing. (writers write for similar readers. It’s how the literature world keeps spinning). So, if you’re descriptive, you can start out slow with lots of awesome adjectives and personification. If you start it with the beginning of an interesting scene, you’ll have those readers hooked. Avoid starting with a dead scene, because a dead scene plus long description equals not-so-good story. An example of a good beginning: “The treetops scraped the heavens; their eerie, naked arms clawing the darkness. Mocking hoots from the shadows erupted and echoed, each unidentified to the several pairs of seeking, golden eyes. Nature’s wind howled through the forests, creeping through each yawning space, stirring the branches and making the trees shiver violently. A lone wolf took the speed of the wind, loping gracefully across the fresh snow that sparkled in the hours of darkness’ gentle lights. There was the soft brushing of feathers above as an owl as white as the winter took to the skies, leaping off of her post. With haunting, fierce golden eyes she followed the wolf as he bounded along the banks of the river, a mere thin gray line that laced through the trees to the owl’s sight. All of a sudden, the wolf came to a halt, soft snow exploding in a wave from the abrupt stop. The cold powder settled, a collection of the lost snow banding itself across the wolf’s wet nose. High in the heavens the owl swerved, wheeling around and honing her sight on the wolf. The wolf bowed his head to the ground, sniffing the crimson blood that bruised the snow and pawing it in wonder. ‘The time has come,’ the wolf snarled. He raised his muzzle to the skies and from his lips released a long, hair-raising howl.” Of course, the beginning could be longer, but you don’t want to stretch it out. This one is short merely because I actually don’t have a story/plot line to work with and I don’t have enough time to spare to write a long beginning. x]
if you’re not so descriptive, start with a bang! Throw the reader right into a crazy scene, and then backtrack into retrospect. The hook is shorter than that of the descriptive hook explained above. By not so descriptive, I mean that you pass through description swiftly and effortlessly. You don’t halt the story to explain each detail to the greatest of your ability, but you still ‘show’ as appose to ‘tell’, and you make it obvious that yes, you can write. Example: “Panting, the albino ran through the darkness, her pale form a streak against the dark. The moon above was as round as the sun, its star dominions twinkling with strife. Every atom that hung in the air seemed to snicker and haunt the albino as she ran, the very energy surging with static. For they had arrived. And they were looking for her”. Yeah. Not very good, but you get the point. You may be able to tell that I’m a descriptive writer, so, my not-so-descriptive example isn’t very good. But, I find that this kind of style (a style that I still like to read, for it’s fast and easy) uses more synonyms than personification.

Middle: This is where the character begins to solve the problem.

End: Problem solved! (or maybe not. But at least something is learned or gained, even if something else is lost). For the ending, be unpredictable! In my opinion, happy endings are hackneyed (that means over used). Don’t have the main girl gallop off into the sunset with her knight in shining armor. Instead, have it that her knight in shining armor is actually a loser in aluminum foil. :] Or have a sudden death. I really enjoy sad endings. And for me, I want to make the reader cry. Why? If the reader cries, then that means that the reader got attached in a way to the character, and was really engaged in the story. I want that.
Have someone you love (best friend preferably. An honest person who isn’t expected to love everything you do.) read your story (whether finished or not. But at the very least when it’s finished), who is a reader and/or a writer and have them give you their input and advice. It may be hard to take in at first – their critiques – but it helps you in the long shot. I really appreciate it when my friends help. (when I have a writer’s block, they help me progress my plot even. I love them. ;] )

Use a timeline. Sketch out point a, b, and c, and jot in how your character gets there.

Thoroughly create your characters. It’s easy for them to come to life if you, the writer, know every detail. The reader doesn’t have to know every little thing like you do, but when writing it makes the character seem more realistic if they are set in stone in your mind. Make sense?

2. Send it in to a publisher. A quick googling session can help you find one. Don’t get discouraged if you’re constantly rejected. Ernst Hemmingway (one of the most famous authors, like, Shakespeare famous) was rejected like, 200 times (or something crazy). But one person liked him and now he is a very rich and happy author.

3. Depends on how long you want it. If you’re a descriptive writer, then it’s easy to get away with a long book while not so descriptive writers tend to have shorter books. Although, I’ve seen it and read it where the situation was vice versa. But, that’s just the typical that I’ve read. Write until there’s nothing left interesting in you. If it progresses the plot, then throw it in there! It be as long as you want, jut keep it worthwhile for the reader.

4. I write in font Arial size 12 or 11. It’s easy to read, a neat and clear font, and not too shockingly big but not I-need-a-magnifying-glass small.

5. Typically, it doesn’t cost anything unless you self-publish. There are self-publishing websites, although I don’t recommend them. (they sort of scare me)

6. Age doesn’t matter, my friend. That’s the beauty of writing! It’s pure freedom in this profession.

wow that was long. hope it helped

Happy Writings ~
