About Saddles

A saddle is simply a structure used to support a rider or other load. The modern saddle styles date back to the 18th and 19th centuries while more rudimentary designs were around as early as 800 BC. Today, saddles are made for a variety of equestrian disciplines including English hunter/ jumpers, dressage, and western. Each requiring a careful fit to both the rider and to the horse. With proper care a saddle can last for decades.

In the Western World, there are two basic types of saddles. Western Saddles are popular in North America and Australia and are sometimes referred to as “Stock Saddles”. English Saddles are known outside on North America simply as Saddles given the relatively low popularity of the western riding style outside of North America. English saddles are used throughout the Western World, not just in England or in English speaking countries. All of the equestrian disciplines in the Olympics use English Saddles. These saddles differ from their western counterparts in that they are lighter, have a flatter appearance, lack a horn (as opposed to a Western Saddle), and typically have a shallower seat. English saddles are used for a variety of disciplines including eventing, show jumping, dressage, saddle seat, horse racing, and polo.

The English Saddle is made up of the following key parts:

• Pommel: The rise at the front of the saddle. This rise is to accommodate the horse’s withers without chaffing. The height and width of the pommel helps the rider adjust their position and seat while mounted.
• Cantle: The rise at the back of the saddle seat. The cantle helps the rider maintain their balance by keeping them from sliding backwards on the saddle.
• Panel: The panel is located under the seat and cantle. It provides a cushion for the horse so that the leather does not pinch.
• Seat: This is the part where the rider actually sits. This will be the lowest part of the saddle’s top line.
• Stirrup Leathers: A sturdy strap, usually leather, from which the stirrups are hung. These leathers hang from metal horizontal stirrup bars found under the skirt of the saddle. The length can be adjusted via buckles to accommodate the varying lengths of riders’ legs.
• Stirrup Irons: These provide support for the rider’s leg and assists in their balance.
• Flap: This is the wide strap of leather on the sides of the saddle. The flap’s job is to protect the rider’s legs and from contact with the billets and buckles.
• Billet Straps: The Billets are straps of leather providing an attachment point for the girth buckles. These straps are longer on a dressage saddle than they would be on a saddle with a forward seat.
• Knee Roll: The knee roll is the bulge at the front of the flap providing padding and support to the rider’s knee.
• Padding: Helps distribute the rider’s weight and protect the horse’s back from the hard tree of the saddle.
• Keeper: Place the end of the stirrup leather through the keeper on the saddle flap.
• D-Ring: Provides an attachment point for a breastplate.
• Gullet: The deep wide groove down the center of the saddle’s underside.
• Skirt: The flap of leather covering the stirrup bar.
• Girth: Attaches with a series of buckles to the billets underneath the saddle flap. The girth is run underneath the horse’s belly firmly centering the saddle on the horse’s back.
• Tree: The frame upon which the rest of the saddle is built. The tree is usually made of wood, composite or fiberglass and is sometimes strengthened with spring steel.

Do you think having a disability affects a person’s ability to ride a horse?

I am a rider and trainer of all kinds of horses from dressage to barrel racing. Lately, every time I enter one of my horses or my barn’s horses, we are rejected. We have everything that is necessary. AKA like a neg. coggins the money a vet report. Etc…. My horses are all in good health, but another friend of mine who is also deaf like me has also attempted to register for the show and was also rejected. There are rumors that the judges disapprove of disabled people riding in the ring. I am furious! I have tried repeatively over the last three months to sign up for the big World Champion Ships, but every time, They always reject me.

People turn you away for being deaf?? That’s a disgrace.
I live in Ireland, we try to welcome disabled people into the ring. I am a volunteer for Riding for the Disabled Association and we regularly enter our riders into shows. I teach a girl who is a triple amputee, she rides her pony in dressage competitions in lots of places and is always judged fairly on her ability, not on her disability.

I 100% do not think disabled people should be treated differently. At RDA we teach people with everything from mild disabilities to very severe disabilities and everyone of them can get enjoyment out of lessons. I think it’s really unfair that you are being turned away because of your disability, everyone should have the right to ride, compete and have fun on an equal basis. It’s basic human rights is it not?
