CLASSICAL DRESSAGE-PROGRAM YOUR POSITION
You’d probably agree that having a balanced, centered position plays a huge role in being an effective rider. And you’d probably also agree that it seems like you’ve been picking away at your faults for years but still struggle to find an independent seat and an elegant position.
How do we know that? We know because we’ve been in the same boat and know how frustrating it can be to ride around for years with the same old position problems and crooked bodies.
So we put our heads together and developed our unique program based on two very powerful sports psychology techniques.
Those two techniques are:
1. Programming the subconscious mind
2. Anchoring
Programming The Subconscious Mind
First, you should know that one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to try to improve your position with iron-jawed determination. The reason iron-jawed determination doesn’t work is that you can only make short-term, temporary changes to your skills when you direct your effort and energy to your conscious mind through will power.
However, when you direct your efforts to your subconscious mind, the changes are permanent.
Next, you need to know a couple of things about the subconscious mind. It operates, in part, as a goal striving mechanism. It’s kind of like the genie in the bottle. It’s just waiting for your instructions. It hears and believes everything you say and visualize, sees it as the goal, and like a guided missile zeroes in on that goal.
Finally, the exciting thing about programming your subconscious mind is that it’s a lot easier to do than using will power. All you have to know is two things:
1. Vivid visualization
2. Self-talk
Program Your Position uses both visualization and self-talk to change the “software” in your mental computer. You get very vivid images as well as illustrations of those images to adjust every part of your body. You’ll start at your seat-your core-and from there, you’ll work down to your toes, up to your head, and right through your fingertips.
Anchoring
Once you have the vivid images in your mind’s eye, you’re given specific “buzzwords” that anchor those images in your subconscious mind. The buzzwords act as a shorthand cue to trigger position corrections. You don’t have to actively “do” anything. Your subconscious mind causes your muscles to fire in the right way so that you automatically “self-correct”.
For example, let’s say you tend to collapse the left side of your waist. Visualize that you have a toothpick on each side of your body. Each toothpick rests between your last rib and your waist. If you collapse on the left side, you’ll get jabbed by the toothpick on the left, and the toothpick on the right will end up on the ground.
You want to stretch up through your left side so your toothpicks stay in place without sticking you. Plus, when you stretch up, you create the right muscle memory. Once you’re sitting correctly, you’ll anchor that feeling with the buzzword “toothpicks”.
Programming Your Position process is fun and effective. And the best part is, once you know the details of how the system works, you can use your own images and buzzwords in the same way to get amazing results without a lot of blood, sweat, and tears!

Dressage training program help?
Cairo is a 7yr old dapple grey mare, born and bred at Hadlow College. She is backed, broken; and ridden away. She is a level 3 horse on the flat and jump, and has lightly competed at dressage, and schooled showjumping and cross country. She is not advanced for her age, she is long, backward thinking, not off or in front of the leg. She is spooky, unless jumping, although she does have a lot of ability. She Is soft mouthed, never strong, and rarely focussed. She has the natural ability to be a very good all round horse, or eventer to Novice level. You could expect her to go out and get around 60% in a prelim dressage test.
What exercises would you use in a training program for her?
Well basically from the sounds of things, you want her attention, interest, confidence and you want her foreward. She sounds a lot like my boy, will shy in the most convenient places right when you are asking for anything slightly harder (or simple even!) such as collection, spook an ANYTHING and EVERYTHING unless we are doing something fun and easy (jumping!). He too was VERY long and VERY backwards. Now he is scoring high 60′s at state level in prelim dressage. The BIG thing which changed him was a decent dressage instructor who understood the issues we were having and was able to teach me to correct them. That should be where you start.
Some exercises which really helped me and my horse were to work him into the contact PROPERLY, not just poking the nose in, but working over his back, stepping underneath him and bringing himself together, basic collection. But it must be working FORWARD into the contact. Key word, FORWARD! Try riding with a whip or spurs. Just in the walk and halt, try asking lightly for an upward transition (to walk or trot), if she does not respond immediately (which they probably won’t), give a flick (or a few really quick not hard) on the shoulder or behind your leg, or use the spurs and get a jump into the transition, a real forward reaction. Try this a few times and after only a couple they should really move forward from a very light squeeze. If at any point your mare is too slow, give a light squeeze then instant flick with the whip so you get an instant reaction. Don’t forget praise and regular walking breaks. You can make it more enjoyable by having a jump set up on the side and pop over that when she has been working well. This will be much harder to do than slowly trotting, and will take time to strengthen and get the fitness up.
Other exercises are in an arena when you go down the long side, push them forward for say 10 strides, or on a circle, push her forward into a big forward trot, then half halt and slow down to a working trot. When you have 3 nice forward paces, and they will travel without you constantly kicking or whipping, then you can introduce contact. This is best taught by an instructor, as it is something that must be felt. If you have them working forward and privide a nice elastic yet steady contact, with a good leg and seat contact (not bouncing or flappy legs), it should take a simple half halt (leg on to ask forward, sit up tall, firm stomach, slight pull-release with reins) and they will bring their hind legs under and start to collect.
Also, take her out of the arena regularly! Do say 10 mins in there then go out for a trail or ride down the road, they won’t get so bored with the arena. If you have a nice big area, go for a canter or gallop and do some fitness work, moving them forward and enjoying it! Then bring them back, do say 5 mins of dressage type work out in the paddock or road, then have more fun. It is also great for eventers to get out and see the outside world and not be bothered by it.
Don’t give up, 7 is definately not an age where it is too late to teach them new things. Don’t worry about “advanced for her age” or anything like that, that is completly relative to all other horses. Just aim for an improvement, these things are not a quick fix and will take months or even a year or 2 to have it correctly established, FORGET “on the bit”, it is nothing unless the horse is forward, half halting correctly, and listening. You must have these first, then the collection will come. This sort of work (if you persist, get lessons, and put the hard yards in) will improve your riding out of sight (forget prelim, you will be ready for some elementary stuff!), and your jumping will be much more accurate and better as she will have the power from behind, listening, and sitting up for the jumps. Just keep at it! It sounds like you have a lovely mare!
Also for the shying, if you feel she is just playing, not truly terrified, with my horse i raise my voice and growl at him to let him know I will not tolerate his games and he snaps out of it imediatly. Otherwise, say she is shying at the trees on the outside of the arena, I would take up a firm contact with my outside rein, give a good half halt to say “listen to me”, bend her a lot to the inside with lots of inside leg (if you have no control, a really bad shy, grab the inside rein and force the head in if you must, try flexing, but as a last resort it will work). If they are not looking at it, are listening to you by collecting and flexing, and working forward, they will not really notice it as badly, it at all. I often circle at that point they shy and make them continually face what they are scared of (flexing to the inside) untill the don’t notice it anymore.
