How to properly ask your parents for a horse?

I am not going to go up to them and be like “I NEED A HORSE! PLEASE!?” but here’s my story. I am 11, and I just started taking lessons about a year ago(Now i’m not saying I need one now, but after my three years of ‘Horseless 4-H’) I know and will know more about going there every day and lunging her, training her, bathing her, brushing and currying her, (they supply hay and feed them at the right times a day), spending time with her, riding for fun with her, and I know, every day, or even twice a day. I know all the right supplies, and we are not poor so we could cost for boarding and deworming and vet and hoofs, ect. I am almost 12, and I know I have only been riding for a year, but my cousin owns a horse and tells me everything, so I know about everything. I would be 15, and SO ready. How do I approach my parents properly when I come to that time? I also plan on being in Show Jumping, Dressage, and Pleasure shows. Thanks for your information!

I think you are starting out with the right attitude – a very mature one for an 11(almost 12) year old. This gives me the impression that you might also be pretty responsible. Both of those things are traits that will help your case. I think 3 years is a reasonable goal, and don’t forget you can also have the intermediate step of leasing a horse. Kind of eases your parents into the idea of horse ownership.

If you continue to show a high level of interest, and a high level of responsibility (including good grades), then your parents will probably know you want a horse. You could say stuff like “when I get a horse someday…” or drop hints like that to make sure they know you want a horse.
