Riding or driving a horse is a very complex task. There is an old US Cavalry hand book out there that defines everything a (cavalry) horse under saddle can or should do – and how to do it. There book has right around 1,500 pages. I doubt that any cavalry trainer ever did read all of it. But there is a way to make things real simple.

If you watch Western Pleasure Riding at a show or even dressage, it all looks pretty simple – till you try to do it.

When you go out in your arena and trot along the rail you can get by, by turning your horses head when you hit the corner. Most likely the horse will not run into the rail and somehow pick up the new direction. And if you are riding just for fun – that might be just fine.

If you go to a show this will not fly. The judge will seriously frown – and most likely throw you out after the first go around. This actually is not “turn the corner”. It is called a quarter circle – and involves correctly done nearly a dozen cues. You have probably found out that you can memorize all the cues but still are getting lost in the process.

I found a way to make things real simple. Well, I cannot make a correct quarter circle simple, but I can make the way to get there easier. My approach is based on a very simple fact – there are only eleven movements a horse can do. Eleven, that is it. Here they are:

1 Move forward – at different gaits 2 Stop – very important! 3 Back 4, 5 Move the head and neck to the left or right 6, 7 Move the shoulders to the left or right 8, 9 Move the rump to the left or right 10, 11 Move the hindquarters to the left or right

Believe me that is it.

When you learn or train your horse you have to be able to produce everyone of these moves with the correct cue. And if you do it one at a time it really is pretty easy. It is not difficult to move your horses head and neck – not don’t pull, do it with your reins hanging loose over your thumb.

Once you have learned and or trained your horse for every single possible move you need to reach the point where it happens more or less automatically – without you thinking about the cue.

And at this point you will find out that now it is fairly easy to put it all into sequence – and there is the perfect quarter circle.

The only one I’ve read out of your list is Sally Swift’s “Centered Riding.” It was actually a required text for the riding classes needed for my equine studies major in college. It is quite useful and helps build on balance and better communication with your horse(s). You won’t be disappointed reading Swift’s book; she is very good at her understanding and teaching of communication and balance in the saddle. Plus, if I remember correctly, it also gives exercises you can do out of the saddle to help improve your balance and strength for when you do ride. She also has a “Centered Riding 2″ book out which I’d also recommend reading.
