Robart Robart Pinchless Walking Horse Bit – 5 $52.5 Robart PRECISION Bits have patented internal springs that allows the port to return to a neutral position quickly upon dropping the rein, giving immediate reward for correct behavior. Great for shoulder control and keeping a lower head set. Why a Pinchless Bit? A horse is a flight and fight animal. If the bit is hurting the horses mouth he is going to respond with fight or flight. Neither of these responses are condusive to training, competing or riding. Take the pain away and you instantly modify their behavior and response to your instructions. If a horse is not new to the bit and is still gapping his mouth, excessive mouth movement or tossing his head, you will want to try a pinchless bit. Using a pinchless bit on a young horse will prevent inflicting pain, keeping the experience less streeful, resulting in easier and improved learning for the horse. Great for walking and all gaited horses. Tongue is not trapped! Smooth ball action allows horse to swallow and relax his face. More gait control.Size: 5 |

Most children are ecstatic to learn that their parents have agreed to send them to equestrian summer camp. Visions of galloping across open meadows, following tree-lined trail rides, and vaulting over breath-taking jumps will probably run through their imaginations. However, the reality is that much of their time will be well spent learning about grooming, safety, riding equipment, and equestrian apparel long before they ever attempt their more grandiose ideas of horsemanship.
Parents, however, have the more pragmatic job of finding a good barn where a reputable summer camp is being held. For the uninitiated, this can feel like a daunting task. Luckily, there are only three major factors that must be considered to find the best equestrian summer camp for your child this year: location, instruction, and equipment.
Location, Location, Location
You can send your young rider off to a destination camp or find one that is local. Destination camps are excellent for the more mature rider as they will meet many like-minded individuals their own age and be involved with horses more in-depth than they can be at a local camp.
Local camps have the advantage of a lower cost, and your child spends the night at home. This also means rides must be arranged, so distance is a factor to be considered. Most barns are located in rural areas, away from busy streets and distractions, which make them an even better location for a summer camp of any kind.
Interview The Instructor
There are a variety of equestrian instructors out there, all who teach in different styles, have a varying volume of students at a time, and abide by different riding philosophies. It is important to find a good match between the rider and the instructor. Instructors should be licensed and insured, and should not mind if you come and watch them work. It is normally easy to see what type of interactions occur between the instructor and their students. If everyone appears comfortable and confident, that’s a good sign.
As you visit with the instructor, be sure to ask how many riders will be in each class and if there will be assistants available to help. Take a close look at the property while you are there as well. Trash, damaged equipment, discarded equestrian apparel, and old feed should never be in sight. Also check to be sure that the barn rules and emergency policies are posted clearly.
Equestrian Apparel And Ring Equipment
This is the most important aspect of any riding situation. Poorly maintained equipment indicates a poor attitude and dangerous circumstances. Clarify what equipment is provided by the barn and what riding apparel must be provided by you. Spend a few minutes in the tack room and look to see that the equipment is clean and well maintained. A broken girth or rotted reins can be devastating.
As the parent, it is up to you to ensure that your child is wearing the appropriate equestrian apparel. The first article of equestrian apparel needed is an ASTM/SEI approved helmet. Some barns will provide this crucial piece of equestrian apparel, and others will require that you purchase or rent your own. If a barn does not require students to wear an approved helmet at all times, find another barn.
Nearly any sort of shirt will do, so long as it is not baggy. Most young riders prefer dressing the part in stylish shirts that provide extra cooling effects to counteract the summer heat. Of course, they will want to top off their outfit with a pair of matching socks under their new riding boots.
Riding boots or paddock boots are preferable to any other type of footwear. Even hard-soled shoes are not designed to keep a foot safely placed in the stirrups. Another basic item on the list is riding pants, known as breeches or jodhpurs. They come in several styles: full seat, knee patch, pull-on, front zip, side zip, and more. Riding tights provide great contact with the horse while protecting sensitive skin from chafing.

What are some fun things i can do with My horse without riding him?
i am not very comfertable riding him, as i do not have a sand arena and i just got him and we havent really bonded yet. what are some things we can do without going riding? i have already taught him to bow, what are some more tricks i can teach him? i DO NOT want to teach him to rear or kiss as he is a 13.3hh proud-cut gelding of dominant type
i have a round yard and an acre of land, yet no flat places. i lunge him sometimes but it gets really boring and he does not respond to the lunge whip very often.
he is very smart and i have not got any jumping equipment, so that rules that out.
help please!
I do lots of groundwork with my horses and donkeys that relates to actual riding and creates nice ground manners.
1. Practice picking up all four feet and working on getting them up to pick with nothing but a touch on the inside of leg.
2. Saddle up and use two lunge lines or long ropes to run from bit thru saddle rings or stirrup (so line doesn’t drag and get tangled) and teach him to ground drive. Really supples them up and gets them soft to the bit. Also teaches them voice cues and clicks or kisses if you use them.
3. Set up an obstacle course for in hand work. Buckets, barrels, a cheap tarp, pvc pipe on the ground, any safe item.
Learn to lead around and across these things. Both right and left sides. Practice side passing with your hand putting pressure where your leg would be. Teach him to side pass and then open a gate and not panic when the gate touches him. Then switch to driving him over and around them.
4. I am a huge fan of teaching a horse to disengage hips on a lead and soon by just my posture and then a look. Work on your body language to move hips over, move shoulders over and to back up. Do direct and drive around you. This will also carry over to your lunge problem. All of these things show you as the leader to be respected and followed which is what you want with a horse like this. All of these things also help YOU to be a better handler and horseman too. Once you get the understanding of the moves and your body language, you will be able to deal with most horses this way.
For example, knowing how to approach one in a pasture to catch after everyone else has chased it all over and you just walk out and put your arm over it and hold it
is priceless.
5. Lead him with a relaxed lead draped over your left arm and your right hand on his neck. Make very specific stops and cues with your body and expect him to follow you. If he doesn’t, go to your lead. Try to turn him both directions with nothing but your body language and hand on his neck. Switch sides and do the same. This is like a good dog trainer with a dog at heel and no lead. It takes some practice and reward but is definitely worth it. There may be a time you have to lead him somewhere without gear and he will just stay with you with a hand on his neck.
6. Here’s one I love with a couple of my horses: come to my gesture. I don’t look at them directly, just out of the corner of my eye. I curl my fingertips in a come hither gesture and they come to me. This is taught in conjunction with calling their name and offering a treat. Be careful of the treat part. I knew which horses wouldn’t become nippers. You can also do this with very light pressure and release on a 12′ line and the gesture. Lots of patting and praise when they come in. Allow all of the time that it takes for them to respond. Sometimes you may have to wait a minute for them to move. Immediately release pressure and then ask again. This is so wonderful when you can gesture and/or call your horse into you.
7. I expect my horses to back up with a verbal cue from a distance. If I have to get them away from a gate or even out of my space, I can simply say BACK and they do it.
Practice this with a lead and halter to start. Reward every little step backwards with pats. Do it a few times in a row and then quit. Work on it during the week. I do it with a another hand gesture towards the chest. Kind of a relaxed pointed hand that I swirl at the wrist. The faster you swirl, the quicker they should back. This is also very important when you need to back one up in a stall. Lots of folks use the snakey lead for this. I skip that because a horse in a pasture does not have a lead on it nor in a stall. I want them to back up without gear too.
All of these things can be done without an arena or round pen or even fencing of any kind. These things are not really tricks, but when executed, they are very impressive and create a very tuned in horse which will help you later in the saddle.
