Sunny days and time off leads a person down the Old River Trail on the Buffalo River. After a river crossing you start to slow down your horse and there is not response to the tug on the reins. In fact it seems like they are not attached to any thing. Hopefully with out a runaway you get stopped and dismounted. Looking the situation over, the Chicago screw attachment that holds the bit to the headstall is gone leaving you with out steering and brakes for your mount.

Chances are your headstall was put together using Chicago screws. They are not the safest way to put together a headstall, reins, or in my opinion any part of tack that depends on your control of a horse. There may be a pretty conchoe on the top side but the screw that holds things together is prone to coming loose. They are not secured unless they are sealed with lock tight or fingernail polish, Check your headstall and reins, if you have Chicago screws be sure to have some hay string or leather strips to use for emergency closure.There are a variety of buckles and methods on the market today that will securely fasten tack safely. Buckles are easier to use and look good. Nickel plated ones are on most of the less expensive tack. Stainless steel is the best you can find.

Whether or not your choice is traditional leather, nylon, bio-thane, or braided horse hair, safety should be first and foremost in your mind when you are riding the many wonderful trails in our country. Check for leather dry rot, rusting or worn hardware, torn or cut nylon, and correct fit of your tack.

Carry several repair items with you. A pocket knife, small pliers, a multi-purpose tool is always nice. A small ziplock bag will easily hold leather lacing, a ball of hay string, extra Chicago screws, even a small hole punch. It is easier to be prepared for small incidents than to have the little things turn your ride into a memory you do not want to remember

Do Gaited horses need special tack?

The woman that I lease from has a bit that she uses on her Tennessee walking horse, that I have never seen prior, just curious if its customary to have specialized tack (bits, bridles, saddles & shoes) for horses that are gaited. Please include your references.

Showing gaited horses TWH, ASB, MFT, Paso Finos, Peruvian Pasos, all have individual requirements for clothing as well as tack.

If the horse (TWH) has been trained for showing, then the horse is used to that bit. They are trained to get ‘on the bit’. The more pressure on the bit, the faster they go.

It’s a show bit and is called the Walking horse bit.
