Sport and performance horses are extremely susceptible to lung disease. Even seemingly healthy horses are frequently affected. Studies have shown that 90-100% of sport horses tested have evidence of damage to their airways that can lead to Equine Reactive Airway Disease (RAD, also called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD)–a serious and career-ending condition. The first (and often only) early sign is decreased performance.

Herbs can be a safe, effective way to both prevent and treat Equine RAD/COPD. In fact, many herbs would help with some of the symptoms of this disease. For instance, Yarrow is often used for upper respiratory complaints.

Properties of the ideal herb for preventing and treating RAD/COPD would include:

• Antioxidant, to reduce inflammation-causing molecules in the body that contribute to asthma

What goes into running a horse farm? i’m doing a school projec tand need help.?

I”m doing a school project in high school right now and i’m stuck. i’m supposed to create a farm, landscape, breed of animal i’m breeding, yearly things i have to do to run the farm written down by each day. it’s very difficult and in my town farming is a big deal. i’ve never really been good with this sort of stuff so i’m clueless. if anyone could tell me what goes into a tack room, stalls, barn, how to breed horses, the fiertility of the Colorado Walking horse and the American Paint i would really appreciate it. Obviously barns can vary in size from only a few horses to several, let’s take an average size barn for example then, say one with twenty horses or so. In a 20 horse barn – you will find besides the actual horse stalls, a few different rooms, generally speaking. There is the feed room where the grains are kept for the horses oats, sweet feed, etc. Then there is usually a wash stall for the dirty horses to wash off inside, there is a tack room where the riding gear and equipment is kept. Some barns either have a smaller barn, a room in the main barn or a loft where the straw, and hay is kept.

Most barns are not heated and some places where it is cold in the winter like here in the Northeast, the barns have a “warm room” with heat where the help can eat lunch or take a break, or just a break room with maybe a coffee pot, fridge, tv, and chairs type set up.

The stall has a feed tub and a water bucket inside or automatic waterers. Stalls are bedded down and cleaned daily with straw and lime for wet bottoms; some people use cedar shavings in the stalls as opposed to straw and some even use sawdust as bedding (for less expensive horses usually).

Tractors are used or wheelbarrows to take the maure to a pile.

Outside the barn are paddocks where the horses are turned out during the day, some horses get turned out together sometimes and sometimes in different paddocks, for various reasons.

The farm and barn usually require basic maintenance like fixing downed boards, the waterers, lawn maintenance, generally making things safe for the horses such as care of tree limbs which could cause danger to a horse or its eyes, care of equipment such as tractors, etc – there is always some type of work to do on a farm.
