When you start to ride or buy your first horse, there are many pieces of equipment you will be interested in purchasing. The first and most essential is a lead rope. Here are pointers that will help you pick out a reliable one.
1. Buy a standard all-purpose horse lead rope. You should be able to obtain one at a local feed and farm supply or tack shop. You can also find them at online tack stores. Basic lead ropes are no different whether you ride English, Western, or another equestrian discipline. At this point you don’t want a specialty item.
2. Diameter of the rope matters. The most common is 5/8 inch. Thinner rope can be uncomfortably narrow in your hand. Thicker rope of 3/4 inch would be acceptable unless you have a small hand.
3. Length is fairly standard: either 9 or 10 feet. Don’t get confused and accidentally buy a 20-foot lunge line. They are not meant for leading. You’ll trip or get tangled up.
4. These ropes are round. Flat ropes are uncommon and are for other uses. For simple leading, a flat shape would feel uncomfortable.
5. Your rope should be the common machine braided variety. This small-medium braid provides enough texture so that it does not pull out of your hand easily. Large braids, found in some homemade ropes, give too much resistance to hand movements along the rope and so are awkward to use.
6. The material of the rope should be polypropylene or cotton. Either ought to feel soft and pleasant. You may prefer the natural look of cotton, but cotton tends to soil more easily. Some people believe cotton grips better. If a choice is unavailable, don’t worry. Either will be fine.
7. The snap connector is probably the rope’s most important feature. Bolt snaps are most common. The bolt opens and closes parallel to the shaft of the snap when you move its attachment point with your thumb or finger.
Bull snaps are less common. They open perpendicular to the snap shaft. Some people find this mechanism easier and quicker to attach to and remove from a halter. Quickness is preferred for safety reasons. If both styles are available, practice attaching and detaching from a halter to see which one feels handier.
8. Color choice is where you can have some fun and express your self. Many riders like to match to other colored gear: halter, leg wraps, and saddle pad, even their own riding socks! Or you can have a distinctive color so you can pick yours out of a group of hanging lead ropes.
Use these guidelines when you look for this fundamental equipment and you will feel assured that you are obtaining the right piece. Using a good quality rope, you’ll be more confident as you lead your horse out for your time together.
