Whether it is your first horse or you own a professional operation, having the right horse tack and the proper bits and bridles is imperative. Finding the right bit will be dependent on several factors, and it may be a process and trying several bits to find the right one. Finding the right bridle may be a little easier, but there are variations in bridles as well.

WHAT IS YOUR DISCIPLINE?

Finding the right bits and bridles will depend partly on your style of riding. The bit and bridle work to get the desired performance out of your horse, and while you may need a bit with leverage for a western horse, a snaffle for hunt seat, or a double bridle for riding saddle seat, understanding the basic expectations of your discipline will help you narrow down your choices.

KNOWING YOUR HORSES MOUTH

When selecting horse tack, the right bits and bridles will depend partly on the “feel” of your horse’s mouth. Dependent on training and the horse itself (as well as the skill of the rider), some horses do well in a gentle bit. The horse is able to respond well in an egg-butt snaffle or other type of bit, while some horses will need a little more bit to feel your cues. Leg cues are important in knowing what type of bit to select as well.

Your horse’s mouth shape will also affect what type of bit to select. If your horse is fighting the bit, tossing his head or otherwise not responding to your cues, then try adjusting the bit or trying a different bit or fit.

TYPES OF BITS

SNAFFLE – a gentle bit, broken in the middle. There are variations of this bit, including such as a three piece or twisted wire snaffle.

CURB BIT – uses a shank to provide more leverage for the rider. The longer the shank, the harsher the bit. The size of the port will affect performance of the bit as well.

KIM BERWICK – this is a good “medium” bit, with the pressure dependent on the port. Some are broken like a snaffle, others are whole pieces.

FITTING THE BIT and BRIDLE

Finding the right bits and bridles includes fitting it to your horse. With the bridle, you want it so be on securely without “pulling” at your horses mouth. The bit itself should traditionally make your horse “smile” at the corners of his mouth. The size of the bit is not just the width, but will also include the thickness and metals. If you are starting a young horse, working with a gentle bit on groundwork will prevent your horse’s mouth from becoming desensitized.

The best way to find the right horse tack is to try it on, and make sure your horse is comfortable. With the right tack, your horse will perform better for you. This makes horse ownership a pleasure when you are not fighting to get the results you want from your horse.

I need help finding the following for when I get my new horse!! If you could post a link with the piece of tack, that would be great. If you find the piece of tack on www.doversaddlery.com/ than please post that link! Thanks!

1) Saddle- I need a saddle under $1000 that is durable and strong. A close contact would be great! I will look into used stuff but what are some good brands? Any links from Dover?
2) Girth- Preferably the same brand as the saddle but if not that’s fine. Any good brands? Padded or non is okay.
3) Bridle- Preferably the same brand as the saddle and girth but if not that’s fine. I need a durable bridle under $200.

Since I don’t have the horse yet, I don’t know sizes or bits or anything. But I already own grooming stuff, halters, fly masks, and saddle pads.
I WANT BRANDS NOT SIZES!

I have come across a bunch of saddle sales at places like Dover, State Line Tack, ets. Many of the saddles on sale are decent name brands like Collegiate, Bates/Wintec, Passoa, Crosby, HDR, and Dover’s “Circuit” line. I LOVE Dover Saddlery by the way. I have ordered from them on many occasions and they are fantastic! Great products, outstanding customer service, accurate shipping of items, high quality. They are my #1 choice for catalog/online orders. FYI…I hear they are also “Smith Brother’s” for all you western enthusiasts! I would bet the reputation goes to the “brother” brand too!

But, back to the question at hand.

Saddles:
**Dover Circuit Elite $899.00 This saddle offers a “test ride” which I love! You can be sure it fits you and your horse well before you shell out a ton of $$!
**Crosby Victory Saddle $1699.99 (at Dover) Appears to be well balanced, fine leather. Company name precedes the item.
**Bates Close Contact $1615.00 (at Dover) “Cair” panels, easy change gullet for more custom fit, test ride…need I say more?
**Wintec Close Contact $449.00 (at Dover) I love the “easy care” of Wintec. You can ride through rain, snow, mud and your saddle will still look good tomorrow! I have also ridden this saddle and, while it is not as comfy as leather it is dang good for a synthetic! Plus it fit my hard to fit mare. Oh, did I mention the price…

Bridles:
**Crown Padded Stitched Horse Bridle $99.90 (at Dover). For the $$ this looks like a great item!
**Crosby Raised Padded Fancy Horse Bridle $209.90 (at Dover). It is only a few bucks over budget and this is a terrific bridle from what my friends (who own one) tell me.
**All of the Dover Circut bridles are just lovely. They have a nice classic, tidy hunter/jumper appearance and fantastic features like stitching and padding.
I have to be honest, while I like Wintec saddles I am just not a fan of their bridle work. Unlike their saddles the bridle materials are not made to be leather like (in fact they are much like an imitation “satin” shoe from payless). However, they are durable and good for all weather riding.

Girths:
Dover had so many good choices that I will just tell you what I like instead. I like “shaped” or “comfort” style girths with a nice sheepskin for softness, less chafe and to wick away sweat. I also like one with a little elastic at the ends so that it has some “give” when the horse moves. Again Dover’s brand is nice, they also have some of the smaller brands available that actually look pretty good. In girths look for quality over name brand. I am always willing to pay a bit more in this area.
