There may be features that you like or dislike, but you at least need to know which imperfections are tolerable and fixable on used horse trailers and which ones are deadly and to be avoided at any cost.
When you go to see used horse trailers, make note of the surroundings. If the seller’s barn, fences and pastures are in ill repair, it is likely his used horse trailer is too. On the other hand, if the place is pristine, he has probably taken good care of the trailer as well.
Hopefully the horse trailer has been in use. Trailers that are parked for a period of time, especially on grass, will have dry rotted tires, and the moisture will hasten the rotting of the wood and rusting of the steel. So, ask if it’s been used recently and how often.
1. Structurally, the framework is the most important thing to examine. Get down on the ground and check underneath the used horse trailer. Don’t worry if you see some superficial rust…steel frames are going to have some. Just be sure the steel doesn’t “give”. Also, poke your finger or use a stick on the steel to be sure it doesn’t crumble. If it does, you can just get in your car and go to the next one.
2. Used horse trailer floor is also vital. If a trailer is not cleaned after being used, the manure and urine will erode the flooring. Be sure you pull the mats out and look underneath them for areas of weakness. If it is wooden, look for signs of rotting. Pay attention to the welded areas to be sure there is no extensive rust that would compromise the strength of the flooring.
3. Next look at the fiberglass coating and look for cracks, holes and splits in the sidewalls. If rain has gotten into these areas, the sidewalls could be weakened. Also check the interior walls. If they are streaked or stained they may be weakened from water damage. Furthermore, there may be a leak that must be fixed.
4. Inspect the roof of a used horse trailer. If it is made of fiberglass you want to inspect to see if the gel coat has been worn away. Does it appear to be thinner in some areas. If the roof is pieced, look at the condition of the seams.
5. Trailer suspensions are important. Spring hangers suspend the leaf springs from the frame. So be sure you look at these hangers for corrosion, as with any other metal part of the trailer. This is really important because a faulty hanger could cause the axle to come out from under the trailer.
6. The brakes will likely be either a 2 or 4 wheel electric system. Unless you are a mechanic, this could be a little difficult. At the least, be sure the brakes are working electronically. Is power from the vehicle getting to the trailer and engaging the brakes? Stand near the trailer wheels and listen for a faint hum. Then test drive the trailer and apply the brake controller manually to see how they grab.
7. The coupler should be in good condition on used horse trailers. This is the part that attaches the trailer to the truck. With a bumper pull, it will fit over the trailer hitch ball affixed to the towing vehicle. Hook to it a few times to be sure it works well. Be sure it is straight and cranks up smoothly. For goosenecks, do a similar inspection, testing the ease of hooking and unhooking from the ball in the trailer bed.
8. Trailer ramps vary in style and structure. Older models simply have doors and the horse must step up into the trailer. Most have ramps that fold down. Whichever you are looking at, be sure the hinges and latches work freely and easily. The ramp should feel substantial and sound, but it should not require a great deal of strength to operate. Check to see if it is warped. You want a solid ramp that horses can walk up with confidence. Any other doors or windows need to be inspected the same way. They should open and close easily and smoothly.
9. Imagine yourself using the trailer. Will your horse be comfortable and safe? Is the ventilation sufficient? Do the escape doors work properly and sized adequately for you to maneuver? Are the stall dividers removable or fixed? You must be able to get to every horse in an emergency.
10. Finally, be sure the trailer has a valid title. When crossing state lines with animals you may have to stop for an inspection. Be sure the vehicle identification number matches the title. Get a bill of sale! A notarized letter of transfer from the seller is a good idea as well for getting the used horse trailer in your name.

How can I store my tack inside my house?
I don’t have a tack room in my barn. I also have a moisture problem and my leather items get moldy very easily in the barn. I’m thinking of storing my tack in my house. I have a sunroom that really needs to double as a mudroom anyway. I’m thinking of re-decorating the room in an equestrian theme and storing my tack in that room as part of the decor. I would only need to store two saddles, bridles, martingales and leather girths as well as my riding boots. Everything else can stay in the barn.
Do you think this will work? Will the tack make my house smell like horse? Am I just inviting more dirt into the house?
Any sites you know of with photos I could consult for tackroom decor ideas? I need a source for really fancy brass racks and hangers too!
