The two point position, also known as the jumping position or forward or half seat, is a foundation position for the rider in any type of jumping activity. The two point position is really very aptly named as the position includes the rider having only two points of contact with the horse. These two points are the legs on either side of the saddle, with the rest of the rider’s body positioned in a balanced, central position to slightly forward position over the back of the horse. This specific position prevents any pressure on the horse’s back which may inhibit or restrict the ability of the horse to launch, complete and land the jump.

The key to learning a good two point position is to practice on the flat, not just when lining up on a jump. To move into the two point position the rider elevates his or her body out of the saddle with the legs and leans the hips slightly back and up while the body moves slightly forward. This results in the rider in a very loose crouching position above the horse slightly forward over the center of the saddle. The rider is not leaning forward over the neck and the bulk of the rider’s weight is centrally located over the saddle. The rider’s back is not arched or concave, but rather should be flat in profile.

With this repositioning into a two point from the three point riding position the horse will recognize that you are cueing for a jump, plus it also allows the horse to move very naturally and freely over the jump. Moving into the two point position also allows your shoulders and hands to move forward, providing more room for your horse’s head and neck to also extend over and through the jump and into the landing. When first practicing movement between positions over jumps it is important to hold the two point position for a few strides after the jump as well as two strides prior to the jump. With practice and increasing strength in your legs you will be able to simply shift through the jump from the three point to the two point and back again.
