The term “coloured” is a generalisation, to describe piebald, skewbald and tricoloured coat patterns seen in horses and ponies.

The Piebald

The piebald coat pattern is a spotting pattern of large black and white irregular areas on the coat usually in a vertical direction; these patterns are asymmetrical and unique to each animal. The skin of the piebald varies, pink under white hair and dark under black hair, the colour of the skin around the eye area can affect the coloration of the iris. Pink skin around the eye area can result in a blue iris, dark skin normally results in a dark iris.

The Skewbald

The skewbald coat pattern is similar to the piebald coat pattern. It is also a spotting pattern of large white and any other colours apart from black, irregular areas on the coat usually in a vertical direction these patterns are asymmetrical and unique to each animal. The skin of the skewbald varies, pink under white hair and dark under the darker shade of hair, like the piebald the colour of the skin can determine the colour of the iris, surrounding pink skin can result in a blue iris; dark skin usually results in a dark iris.

Tricoloured or coloured

Tricoloured or coloured coat patterns are those of a skewbald coat pattern with a partially or totally black mane and or tail, long a go tricoloured coat patterns where called “oddbalds” but this term is no longer used.

Coloured horses and ponies are found in many different breeds and cross breeds, therefore coloured horses and ponies can be used for various equestrian pursuits, there size, physical capabilities and temperament depend on the type or breed of the animal. Where can i buy pink accessories for my horses as currently everything is black or brown and at my friends stables there is a girl there who has everything pink and id like that for my girls

the accessories i would most like in pink or that are just a bit different are:

lunge rein

Hi, most tack shops can get the funky coloured stuff to order ( Actually it’s quite fashionable so they may even have it in, our local one does and it’s only a small shop)
You can look on Ebay as there is always a lot of fashion horse stuff on there too.
My daughter got pink kit for her loan horse – we could have got saddle, bridle and martingale in pink as well but I thought that was going TOO far !.
We are in the UK too.
