How much does it cost to own a horse?

I’m currently looking at adopting a horse or two, depending on the asking price. I live in between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I’ll be boarding the horse(s) at our family stable (that will hopefully be finished soon). I’m looking for the average prices for vet bills, and the farrier. Plus hay, grain, bedding, tack. And anything else you might be able to think of.

Yes I have experience with horses. Also the horses I’m looking at are horses that have stopped horse racing, and are ‘retired’ from that sport.

i’ll tell you everything i pay. some you will find will be more, some less. this is just what i pay.

feed:
hay-my horse has hay included in board. even if i did buy it though, i wouldnt tell you. hay varies a TON city to city, county to county, state to state. you just need to call some local farmers & see.

50 lb bag purina strategy- 14 dollars (was 6 lb per day, im cutting him back to 4. how much grain they get or if they get grain depends on the horse. if youre rescuing, they may be underweight. if this is the case theyll need a lot of grain. grain amount depends on workload & weight)

really hard to predict. stuff comes up! budget AT LEAST 1000 a year. accidents happen, emergencies come up. an emergency (colic, severe wound, etc) can run you 500 easily. here’s what ive had to pay in my 3 months having him.
