My daughter is a horse lover. She will do anything to look after her horses as best she can. (Little does she know that half the time I’m paying for that care though!) Two years ago, we bought her an ex race horse that she has since trained up to be a show jumping horse. As you horsey people know, race horses are brought up being stabled and don’t do well in the cold, so now we had to build a small horse barn for Cara’s Star. Well to cut a long story short I got a set of small horse barn plans and went to work building this barn.

It has since grown into quite a master piece and now we stable 3 horses, have a feed room and a tack room. The barn has a nice overhang so rain doesn’t get in as easily as before.

Are you looking for a set of small horse barn plans? Well as you probably know by now there are quite a few resources online, if not, just do a search for them on Google and you are bound to find some. Many will claim to be free, and they most likely are, but I would avoid those because they really compromise in detail and finishing’s.

We built our mini horse barn (as my daughter first called it) out of pallets. I managed to get a good deal at a friend’s lumber yard. If I bought the wood through him, he would cut it for me. I knew the exact lengths because of the cut chart that came with the plans so it was easy for him to follow. The rest of the materials I bought from the local hardware store, including the corrugated iron roof.

I had an electrician organize the electricity, but the rest I did myself, including digging a 20 yard line and laying down pipes so that the barn would have running water. If you are thinking of doing this on your own, and you want water and electricity, make sure you build as close as possible to the nearest points, otherwise you will have a huge task on your hands.

I adapted the plans to be big enough for 1 horse and allowed space for extensions down the line. Last year we added on another stall without much hassle and I still used the same set of plans.

Basically my job was made a lot easier because I had such a thorough set of small horse barn plans. They were nothing fancy, but they covered every detail of the project. I knew exactly what I had to do at each step.

I did most of the building on my own and my daughter helped with the final varnishing and painting the doors. Remember to keep things simple. A set of loafing shed plans might do the job just as well.

Ideal Farm?

If you had the money what would be your ideal horse farm plan be? What would the barn look like, how many stalls, pastures, etc? What kind of stall flooring would you have? How big would your tack room be, would it be air conditioned, and what else would you include?

well i’m a simple laid back guy and thats something i never really thought about. but the stalls would be composed of hard oak and redwood boards with black iron bars for doors and windows with the old fashioned red barn and as many stall that can fit in it with 3 pastures two front small one to seperate fillies and stallions and a gigantic one in back for the yungins and seniors. with rubber mats covered with shavings as stall floors. the tack room would be the size of a small city bedroom. yes air conditioned if need be. and an arena indoor and outdoor. also need a round corral. that should cover it all.
