General tack care and saddle maintenance deems that to ensure the longevity of your tack, you must keep it as clean as possible. It is preferable to check the tack and, if especially dirty or sweaty, clean it after your ride. Begin by taking the tack apart, removing bits, stirrups, etc. and brush off as much loose dirt as you can. In order to ensure a thorough cleaning of the tack, start with basic saddle soap, warm water and a sponge.

Whether you use a bar of saddle soap or a liquid cleanser this will help to clean out the pores on the leather. The most essential aspect of proper general tack care as well as saddle maintenance is to get as much of the dirt out of the leather pores as you possibly can. Use a damp sponge with the soap and lather every part that is sweaty or grimy. Soap up one whole areas of the tack and then take the dampened sponge and wipe it clean. Be sure to rinse it well and get all the soap out to prevent soap and dirt buildup.

Be as careful as you possibly can in regards to your general tack care and saddle maintenance. You need to encourage the leather to remain as smooth and as beautiful as possible. Do not soap any suede areas, just brush it. If there is tooling on the bridle or saddle, use a small wooden pick to clean out the design.

Let the saddle and tack dry overnight and then apply a leather conditioner. If your leather is brand new then cleaning regularly will keep it looking beautiful for years to come. Guard against over-conditioning the tack because this can lead to excessive oil buildup which is not what you are aiming for. Seek a healthy balance. Maintain your saddles and tack on a regular basis and you will enjoy years of rides with no worry about your tack failing you.

The most important piece of tack to get the measurement right with is the saddle, if its the wrong size it will be uncomfortable for the horse and that will probably make him difficult for you to ride.
The best saddles on the market at the moment I think are the wintec saddles, not only are they synthetic so easy to clean! they also have an adjustable gullet so you can make the saddle wider or narrower depending on how fit the horse is (you can get a thing you put over the withers which tells you which gullet to use). Which just leaves the length to get right! The back of the saddle should be no further back than the ribs and you should be able to feel the shoulder blade at the front of the saddle. Saddle lengths are measured in inches, in half inch differences (you could borrow someone’s saddle to work out how much longer or shorter your saddle needs to be than theirs).
As for the rest;
bridle – pony/cob/full
bit – cm’s between rings, no pinching or big gaps
girth – inches/cm’s should be small enough to have room to tighten it but big enough to reach both sides when you first put it on
stirrup leather – better to buy bigger than smaller as you could always add extra holes and cut some of the length off. Alternatively get wintec webbers, not as bulky as the old leather style.
stirrup – not too big that your foot could slip through but not too small that you dont get the ball of your riding boot stuck.
