The Evolution of Garage Organizers

Eons ago when the first garages were built, it was with the intention of storing wagons, horses and tack and was called a barn. People did not horde a lot of stuff so they did not have a lot of need for storage. Those who were wealthy and had stuff, had big houses and servants to worry about where to put it all. With the advent of the modern age and the invention of the automobile, the modern garage was born. But the modern garage wasn’t just used for cars. Slowly the modern generation became pack rats, after all, there is just so much neat stuff that we need! With the computer age, not only were there a lot of advances in technology, but we have also become a society that loves our recreation and new forms of recreation are constantly being invented. We also have a lot of hobbies, from wood and metal working to landscaping and gardening. So what do we do with all this stuff? We put it in our garages and before we know it, our cars do not fit.

At first, the solution in garage organizers was shelves, and then cabinets. But lets face it, many things in our garage do not fit well on shelves and cabinets. Help, mold growing on my tack! Need new storage options?

I have an old barn converted for horses, but I don’t have a tack room and I store my tack in the center aisle. Its been humid lately and I noticed that all my leather is growing mold on it now! I have to get my tack out of that barn asap. Obviously the barn is too damp to even build in a tack room, the upper level is very dry, but then there is the issue of bird and bat poop. I am considering a tack cabinet outside the barn underneath the 6 foot overhang or in the upper level of the barn (not convenient)? I assume that a cabinet inside the barn would still be susceptible to mold and moisture. I could store my tack in my garden shed too, but I hate to do that. I’d have to clean it out and keep it really organized first. I also have an old outhouse that could be a tack room, but that would be a big job too and kind of gross and not very convenient. Any advice?

It’s really tough to get mold off tack once it has started to manifest. If you do brush it off brush it away from all your other tack- mold spreads!!!! And throw away the rag you brushed your tack with.

There are a few things you could do to prevent/lessen the mold from populating. l moved from NJ to GA and the humidity is AWFUL here. So the barn owner tries as hard as she can to cut down the room for the mold to grow. lf you do have an area that would suffice as a tack room, add a fan to keep air circulating, this way there is no ‘static’ air with water in it to sit on your tack. Once you have found an area to keep your tack try cleaning your tack with a Ph balanced tack cleaner- saddle soap (glycerine) can actually PROMOTE mold… so in the summer/humid months l don’t recommend using ‘glycerine’ based soaps every day. l personally love ‘leather therapy’ and ‘lexol PH’. l have had wonderful success with both. After making sure the environment is somewhat dry and your tack is clean, make sure all your tack is dry after riding… Let saddle pads/saddle/tack dry in the sun, (just for a little) and make sure your saddle is dry from horses sweat. Any added moisture will add to the mold problem.

If you plan on storing your tack in a plastic cabinet, make sure to wash the cabinet down inside with diluted bleach solution. Taking all these precautions should help.
