When the cold winter weather first arrives, many horse owners bring out the horse winter blankets without thinking about it. They fail to realise that a horse’s natural winter coat is much more insulating than a blanket and the horse will usually be warmer without a horse blanket unless it has been clipped, is outside in an exposed area, or has come from a warmer climate. The horse’s natural defence for colder weather is to grow a longer winter coat. The longer hairs that grow through help to trap body heat against the skin. It’s amazing how this works because tiny muscles in the skin raise the hairs, creating air pockets that increase the insulating effect. If you flatten this raised coat by adding layers of light blankets, or even one heavy one, it can actually make the horse colder.

Using horse blankets are a great way to help keep your horse warm in those nasty winter months. They are also a great tool for keeping them clean and not having to deal with all the shedding of hair come spring. Selecting your horse blanket can be difficult and confusing. You will be sure to find the quality blanket that your horse needs with the price that your wallet needs.

It can put the horse at increased risk if it is not accustomed to being blanketed. If the horse becomes overheated it will begin to sweat. This dampness causes it to become chilled later, which then increases the risk of pneumonia or other respiratory infections. If it is necessary to blanket a horse in the colder temperatures of morning, make sure that you or another responsible person is there to take the blanket off when temperatures rise later in the day.

Blankets are sometimes used to keep the horse’s hair short. If horses are blanketed at the beginning of the autumn, especially if kept in a lighted area for 16 hours a day, they will not grow a winter coat. Blankets also protect horses that are kept with a short, clipped hair coat for show purposes. When a horse is given a full body clip, or even a partial “trace clip,” it needs to have a blanket kept on at all times if the weather is cool because the horse no longer has the natural insulation of a longer hair coat. If a blanket is put on a horse at the beginning of the winter in order to suppress the growth of a winter coat, or if the horse is kept clipped in cold weather, the blanket it cannot be taken off until warmer weather arrives in the spring.

The outer shell is normally made of nylon fiber which will not snag or tear. It is treated with a waterproofing that also makes it resistant to rot and mildew. This waterproofing also helps to hold heat in. However, in the most extreme cold the waterproof coating might crack. The filler is normally foam particles or fiberfill which is light and has insulating properties.

A cooler or a mantle, is a large, nearly square blanket with ties that is draped over a horse that is hot and sweaty from an intense workout, or one that has just been bathed and is wet all over. It is commonly made of wool or synthetic fleece, though a few designs are made of woven cotton. It is worn as the horse is being walked to cool down and allows enough air circulation for the horse to dry, but slows the rate of drying to prevent the horse from becoming hypothermic. It is designed so it can be tied shut in front, most designs have a small browband which can be used to keep it positioned well up on the neck, and it may have a loose cord that goes beneath the tail to prevent the wind from blowing it off from the rear, but usually it has no other straps or attachments. It is intended to be used on a horse while the animal is being led or held by a person and not left on an unattended horse. In windy weather, a loose surcingle may be added to prevent the cooler from blowing completely off.

A traditionally-shaped blanket of loosely crocheted cotton, called an anti-sweat sheet, is used to absorb moisture.Often used alone to wick moisture from the surface of the horse, if placed under a cooler, it is removed when it becomes wet.

Two easy questions. 10 pts. ?

1. I’m going to try on some used Dressage boots that a lady has tomorrow. Should I wear my breeches and tall socks or just jeans? If they dont fit, do tack shops carry consigned dressage boots? I cant afford to buy new ones.

2. I’m starting a new job on sunday at 2, and I’m cleaning stalls in exchange for dressage lessons and carriage lessons on a ladys Friesians. I also an helping raise, train, and show her horses. I might also get to go to Utah (I live in ID) and meet a world class trainer! (awesome!!) Should I bring treats for the horses? I have some Start To Finnish Peppermint flavored horse treats that are new (I havent opened the packages yet). Should I bring those for the horses? The woman is very nice, and its a relaxed environment at her barn.
