As temperatures warm up and you begin to look forward to riding again, be sure to not overlook the importance of caring for your leather tack. Leather has pores in it, just like your skin. These pores gather dirt, sweat, and moisture that rob it of flexibility, causing cracks rendering the piece useless. The winter cold can also inflict considerable damage to condition of your leather tack.

Begin by brushing the leather with a soft brush to remove all the dirt from the cracks and crevices. This can also be done by a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. It is important to remove all the dirt before oiling to prevent buildup. If need be, use a toothbrush to get into the smallest spaces.

Next, apply a cleaner with a damp sponge. When choosing a cleaner, look for one that will clean without drying the leather. You also want to avoid cleaners containing wax because it will darken your leather. Wipe off any residue that will dry and crack the leather and then wait ten minutes before oiling your tack. Be sure you allow the leather to dry naturally. Do not use heat.

Apply conditioner to slightly damp leather with a soft cloth or sponge. As with cleaning, apply conditioner to both sides of the leather to get maximum absorption. If the tack seems to absorb the oil relatively fast, apply a second coat. Use only 100 % neatsfoot oil for conditioning. Following these tips can extend the life and wear of your leather tack.

How’d you first cross country schooling experience go?

I’ve brought my horse to two shows the first one he was a little freaked but nothing dangerous, and the second show he was an angel:) So now we’re going cross country schooling next weekend. He’s five and a half:). So how was your first cross country show/schooling experience. And if I start liking eventing I’m going to buy a vest, but is it safe to buy one used? There is a consignment tack shop near me, but I’m just wondering if it would be safe to buy a second-hand vest, I would never buy a second hand helmet but I’m not sure if the same rules apply for the vest Thanks for the help.

oh gosh, hope you’re ready for a long answer that was probally the most memorable lesson! I usually rode a green horse but he wasn’t ready for this so I rode a horse I had only ridden like twice in the past year, and not at all recently. Ok so we start out in the outdoor arena, there’s 5 girls 3 are on good horses who take fences pretty well you just have to sit up and half halt, 2 are on horses who are not confident over jumps at all. Ok so it’s all pretty well we start with a cross rail and then a gate and the 3 horses who are good keep that reputation although each have their own problems (heavy on the forehand, likes to buck, likes to launch from a long spot) they did pretty well. The 2 who didn’t do jumps well, they didn’t do jumps well. The mare refused several times before her rider flew over the fence alone, the gelding refused and his rider slipped but didn’t fall. We head out to the x-country course and of course this was everyones first time on it so nobody wanted to go first, i got nominated. So I went and the horse did great, the other 2 horses who were good at jumping went and did good too. The next fence was at an angle I brought the horse up and he refused, circled and went again and he stopped I slapped his rump to get him going and he backed up, I rode him forward and he tried to half rear and before he knew what he was doing I had ridden him over the fence from a halt (it was only like 2′) we headed towards the next jump and I aimed him for the highest part, he bucked and I lost both stirrups so I jumped it without stirrups (this one was only 2’6″ so not a huge deal) he landed with a buck and we cantered away with no stirrups. The other 2 horses who were jumpers went one did well the other bucked on landing but not bad. Our next jump was on the other side of the field, my horse came up bucking and lept over with my feet half in the irons half out, and cantered up the hill with no irons. we were asked to halt on top of a hill so another horse could jump and not think he’s alone (he can get herd sour if horses aren’t near) so he went lept over and cantered away then out of nowhere bucked and lept into the air ad his rider flew up off his back no reins or irons 100% in the air and landed back in his back and he stayed still but his rider had twisted her ankle on the landing so she got off and got onto one of the non jumpers and one of their riders got on that horse. The 3rd rider who had been on a jumper went and the horse threw a huge buck upon landing and his rider fell, landing on her head breaking the visor off her helmet. The horse got loose so we built a wall of horses blocking the exit, the horse came up to my horse and bit him sending my horse in a frenzy. So my trainer got on and schooled him for a few minuites before his rider got back on and did the fence again. After that the only rider who hadn’t gone and was still on a non jumper got on that horse. The 2 girls who hadn’t done any fences yet ran through the course we had and we all headed over to another jump, a log pile. Those 2 girls popped over that and I went over it too since my horse hadn’t exactly ended on the best not bucking before the last fence, but he did this log pile really well. All in all it was an exciting day but everyone was back the next lesson asking when we could go back out and do it again. It was defiantly a lesson to rember but I loved it and want to do it again. As for the vest, I would go safe and get a new one if you end up liking cross country – I think my answer was a pretty good example of the fun dangers of cross country so it’s good to have and I wouldn’t take the chance of having one that won’t do the job it should.
