Horse Tackle

If you have not tried surface fishing for Carp you are missing out on a really fantastic and exciting method of Carp fishing There is nothing like seeing the big swirl around your bait and then that slurping sound as your surface bait is taken by what is usually the larger than average Carp.

I have tried many methods of surface fishing and can tell you they all work and one of the most interesting facts is that the Carp you catch are usually bigger that what you will take from a bottom bait, I don’t know why this is but previous experience has always shown me when I take a Carp from the surface its a nice one and bigger then the average bear!.

We can use many different types of baits for surface fishing, dog biscuits, pop-up boilies, ready made floaters specially prepared with delicious flavours, the list is endless all of these work but my favourite is the old trusted bread crust. I have caught more Carp on floating bread than any other method and to set this up is really simple, I will explain this for you in a moment.

I see many anglers using what we call the ‘controller float’ this is simply a float that is heavily weighted for casting distance and we have a 3 to 4ft tail with our bait usually sitting on the surface behind the float. Now, don’t get me wrong this is a good method you can cast virtually anywhere but I have always found one major problem with this method the float will not stay in the prime area where you want it, especially if its a windy day, you know the spot by the Lille pads where you have catapulted those free offerings and those carp are taking them like food is going out of fashion!.

I decided it was time for a change and tried something so simple it just could not work, or could it!, yes you are right it worked and it worked so well I could cast my bait out to the exact spot I wanted and it never moved, perfect!.

So, what method did I use, here it is, please do not under estimate this method because its looks to simple I have found this to be very effective whenever I have used it, this is what you do. You setup a simple ledger rig, free running, slide the ledger on to the line, add a ledger stop below the ledger, one side only we need this to be free running and then tie on our hook, for crust fishing I will usually use a size 8 or 6 hook.

Now we start with a tail of about 2 to 3 ft add some bread crust and cast out, id the bread does not rise to the surface our tail is to short and the depth of the water is deeper than 2 or 3 ft. We slide the ledger of another foot, re-cast until we can see the bread floating in top of the water. I have used this method in water that is over 10ft deep, so I had a ten foot tail but can still cast this out easily.

So, now we have our weight sitting on the bottom and out bread floating on the surface, and yes you guessed, it will stay exactly where you cast it, even if there is a gail force wind!.

Advice about a new horse coming home?

I am bringing my **NEW**15.3hh TB/QH cross home from his old owner to my barn that I ride at. I ride at a privately owned small stable, it is the owners daughter and myself at the barn. I need some advice as to products I should definitely have, and what I should expect and especially some tips about my horse and his daughters horse and how we should tackle that obstacle.

The three questions I think I asked were:
-Which products should I buy when I go and get my saddle ect.?
-What should I expect for his behavior?
-How should I introduce him to his new “stable buddy”?

Is there any other advice you have about when you first got your new horses?

I have 2 horses. Both just moved to a new boarding facility, so I just went through this myself lol and twice over at that.
list of things you probably want to buy:
**saddle and saddle pad (also make sure that you get a saddle that fits, and a built up pad if he has high withers)
**headstall
**reins
**bit
**fly spray (trust me it really does make a difference, when the flies come out I refuse to ride without it)
**horse shampoo/conditioner
**sponge (for the above)
**sweat scraper (for sweaty work out days or for after a bath)
**tack box
**hard, medium, and soft texture brush
**curry comb (I suggest having a rubber one for summer and a metal shedding blade for spring and really muddy days, gets the dirt right off)
**hoof pick
**mane and tail comb/brush
**halter (padded ones or rope halters are really nice, and prevent rubbing the hair off their face)
**lead rope
**lungeing line (30ft)
**lungeing whip
**boots or polo wraps for lungeing or arena work out
I’m a budget shopper and that’s the narrowed down list of things I have for my horse, and most of it you don’t even need right away, just a list of stuff to accumulate.

As far as his behavior goes, he’ll probably be really prancy and curious when he arrives, probably neighing at everyone and snorting a lot as he sniffs stuff.

When you’ll want to keep him in a separate paddock, but one that is right next to the one he’ll be staying with the horses in (DO NOT let him out right away with them, it’ll turn into a kicking and biting fest, my big boarding place did this and it sucks, my private facility taught me this method and it works wonders for newcomers) that way they can smell each other and get to know each other through the fence without causing serious damage some horses can to newcomers. If possible keep him in the separate paddock for 2-3 days so the horses can get familiar with him. Then let him out with them and they probably won’t even care except the alpha of the herd, expect him to get a LOT of bite marks on his butt, it happens and there is no stopping it sadly. he’ll be bitten up for a couple months while they all fight over dominance.

When he arrives, after letting him meet his new friends from his paddock, take him out with a halter and lead rope and lead him around everything, keep it a bit loser and just kinda follow him around, let him smell what he wants to smell, and lead him by anything that might be potentially scary while riding (i.e. scary flower pots, mailbox, sound of a door opening and closing, etc) just let him sniff his way around and get familiar with the area. DO NOT ride him for at least a day or 2, depending on how he is adjusting.
I would highly recommend lungeing him if you know how before riding him so that he can get to respect you before you hop on him. Give him carrots, and pets so he can learn to like you, and that you are who he is to bond with. Brush him a lot, help him calm down. touch his legs, get him used to you being around him and all over him.

As for having a certain buddy, when I say keep him in a paddock separate from the other horses, if there is a certain horse you want him to “bond” with , put that horse in his separated paddock with him for a couple days. When i brought my horse to my new facility that my other horse had been in for a couple weeks, we put them in together and they became best friends even before being in the pasture together, they just kinda hook up being together right off. They even have the same girlfriend lol!

Anyway I hope that helps. if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail, I just went through all of this myself!

-EDIT- I just reread your question to, I may have misunderstood, if there are no other horses but the one, I wouldn’t worry about keeping them separate then of course lol, just put them in together and get out of the way. haha.

-EDIT-
DO NOT LISTEN TO BABY DUE. wtf is she thinking posting that. If your horse is fearful f something DO NOT hit him with a crop. that’s insane. You do not want to punish him for being scared of something, your only going to teach him that it IS fearful. It’s like… because I’m scared of spiders, and someone hits me, I’m going to be more scared of spiders. Her horse must be naughty as hell. If your horse shows signs of being scared of something loosen up the lead rope, let him sniff it, if he starts to rear up or pull back let go, let him deal with it. calm him down after his panick is over by telling him softly it’s ok and approach him with your hands out, when he settles pet him a lot, so he knows it’s safe. Lead him to the thing he got scared of and walk him around it. YOU must confront him with the scary things or it will get worse later on, you don’t punish him you simply show him that it’s NOT scary. lol. what an idiot baby due.

-EDIT-
someone below is saying you can ride the first day. DON’T. your horse will be very stressed out meeting you and the new horse, and all the new surroundings. unless you want to end up on the ground or you want your horse to colic, let him get used to his surroundings for at least a day. Even if the horse is level headed and isn’t really phased by his new surroundings, play it safe, riding will just put him over the edge. Let him get to know you and his new life before you just get on.
