In GREEN Oriented environment, today, we are constantly reminded about the negative aspects of the gasoline powered automobile, but think for a moment, where we would be if it was not introduced in the early 20th century?

If the population was not checked by the replacement of the horse as a method of work energy and transportation it has been estimated London would be covered in 9 feet of horse manure. So in one way, has the automobile improved the health of our environment?

But I am here to address the manure and pest management of our growing horse population, 9.5 million today and now providing pleasure to most of their owners, rather than treated as beast of burden and work. As the upper middle class grew in post WWII and the suburbs were developed the opportunity to own and enjoy the horse became available to many. The population was at it ebb in 1950 at little over 2,000,000 head and now at the 9.5 million number according to the American Horse Council, 2005 Census.

So the problems of health and safety of the management of this increasing population must be addressed by owners and local governing bodies.

1. Each year, a 1,000-pound horse can generate eight to ten tons of manure, accumulating at the rate of as much as two cubic feet per day, including bedding

2. Since these horses are usually confined on small acreage, most manure is hauled to local landfills and much benefit is lost

3. Poor manure management can negatively affect Ground Water Quality

4. Poorly managed manure accumulation can increase Fly and mosquito population with the inherent health and nuisance problems

So what are solutions?

They vary depending on size of operation, but follow some general rules for all applications.

Horse Stalls and Paddock areas

1. Use absorbent bedding (preferably wood pellets)

2, Sift and remove manure minimum once a day and the over-saturated Bedding material

3. Haul to a composting station or collection bins for haul away.

Pasture areas

Regularly Harrow spread the manure clumps in pasture

Since the hauling of manure usually represents a cost item in most localities, an efficient composting system is the best choice allowing for end product value from a waste product.

Composting also helps in fly control and can provide actual net cash flow.

Peter Moon in Washington has perfected a manure/horse waste composting system.

This system can be applied to a backyard 1-3 horse facility to a 100+ head track or commercial boarding establishment.

The advantages are ground water problems are mitigated, and the end product can be applied to enrich your own pastures or sold to local landscapers or gardeners.

Puting a sheet on horses?

my horse is 23 years old and has a 1-2in winter coat. I have a water proof horse blanket/sheet … it looks something like this http://www.amazon.com/Polar-Denier-Nylon-Miniature-Blanket/dp/B0029AWL88 I all so have a two year old mini horse with a 2-3 inch coat I was wondering if I should put a sheet on them to keep of the snow/rain we have been having (i live in north arkansas) I just want them to be warm but will it just mush down there fur and make them colder? also they have a shed but its kind of leaky

If they are cold and shivering than definitely put one on. mashing there hair down will not make them colder, what will make them cold is getting wet and any wind on top of that will really give them a chill. You can always put one on just while the weather is bad and take it off when it improves. I put one on my horses when it starts getting breezy and rainy. Even with a full winter coat and protection from the elements they still can’t handle the weather. And You want to prevent them from getting to cold and chilled then getting sick.
