One of the first commands that you will need to be able to communicate to your horse is command or cue to move forward. While you may have heard people talk about giving their horse a kick or a tap with a riding crop, most horses move forward with much more subtle cues and signals from the rider. A horse is usually just as eager to get out and see some new country and get to move about, so typically the go forward command is easy to teach and is actually its own reward.

To teach your horse to move forward you will need to be positioned correctly in the saddle. You should be sitting up straight and tall, with your legs close to the horse’s body, heels down and toes slightly up, which will happen naturally if you are seated correctly. Have the reins firmly in one or both hands, depending on what riding style you are using. The reins should be loose enough to have no pressure on the bit but still allow you to use them to control the horse and to stop when necessary. To move forward make sure you are sitting correctly and the reins are not tight, then gently squeeze with your calves and use a clucking or kissing sound to signal the horse to move forward. If this doesn’t work, gently tap your heels to the horse’s ribs, while still applying gentle and firm pressure with your calves. If you kick too hard or squeeze too tight, the horse may take off a bit faster than you want, but just relax and gentle and firmly pull back on the reins, saying “steady” or walk. Whatever you do don’t pull back immediately and violently on the reins as the horse will become confused about what you want, which may result in the horse rearing up, a very dangerous thing for both the horse and rider.

When the horse is in motion and you want to stop, give the stop or whoa verbal command and gently and firmly pull back on the reins. Don’t squeeze with your legs, remember this is the cue to move forward, rather relax your legs. As soon as the horse stops, release all pressure and give them a quick rub on the neck and fully release the reins to remove any tension on the bit. Backing up means coming to a stop using the whoa command, then continuing to apply pressure, gentle squeezing and giving the verbal command of “back”. When the horse starts moving release the pressure so he or she understands they are doing the right thing. If they stop re-apply pressure on the bit, with the legs and give the verbal back-up command.

To turn your horse using straight reining, pull back gently on the rein that is on the side you want your horse to turn, while gently moving the opposite leg back on the horse’s body and applying pressure. For horses that neck rein, gently press the opposite side of the neck with the reins while applying pressure with the leg on the same side that you wish to turn.

Once you have mastered turning, stopping and starting at a walk you can gradually increase gaits until you are up to a canter. Never go at a pace that seems too fast for you or that you don’t feel comfortable working at.

dressage barns in devon (alberta) area?

ok i’m fifteen i have been ridding for about almost five years. and i right know ride at an amazing barn but it the problem is it is a barn that teaches jumping and the problem is that i have ridden some horse that have really upset me and kind of scared me away from jumping so i got to the point were i wasn’t moving up and i started to get really nerves and freck out when i was going to jump a course in my lesson the horse feeling that would refuse it got so bad that he refused every jump. but that only happened when we were jumping when we were warming up i did fine. so i thought i might go and try to find a barn that teaches dressage so i can try something different!
(plz dont say i’m giving up because you don’t know i have been trying this for five years i have no talent in jumping i get to scared with most horses and no matter how hard i try i cant get over it)

I’m from Calgary but I have some horsey friends up in Edmonton which I think is near Devon. I have hear of a lot of stables down in southwest edmonton/spruce grove(isn’t that near Devon?). The dressage ones they know of are Amberlea meadows and Maple Leaf Meadows. I’ve heard really good things about Maple Leaf Meadows, but sorry I don’t know the prices.
