Horse Rugs Several Types And Uses

Horse rugs come in many different shapes, fabrics, weights and sizes, all designed for a different use. Some are light, some are heavy, some are for when a horse is working, others for when it is rested, some for indoor, some for outdoors. Differences in fabrics, heaviness, thickness, shape and other factors are determined by the needs of the horse in certain conditions.

Although most horse rugs are meant to be worn when a horse is at rest, there are several which may be used when the horse is being ridden or worked. Saddle blankets prevent chafing from a saddle and provide some heat. A longer quarter sheet which extends to the horse’s rump provides even more warmth if needed.

There are numerous horse rugs designed primarily for outdoor usage. The specific threats to the horse such as cold, flies, rain or dirt determines the type of rug which should be chosen.

The most lightweight outdoor horse rug is the summer blanket, designed to simply keep the horse clean and offer some pest protection.

The slightly heavier, but still relatively light, turnout blanket is suitable for a pastured horse during the spring and early autumn, offering a little protection against the slightly cooler evenings and mornings. Some are waterproof or water resistant, if needed. They can also be used throughout the summer months as fly protection.

Turnout rugs are heavier and thicker. Often manufactured from breathable, waterproof or water resistant fabrics, they provide warmth and protection for horses turned out in colder weather. Many come with different pieces so it can be specifically adapted to the horse’s needs according to the conditions. The New Zealand turnout rug is still in use and is a simple cover made from a thick, heavy waxed canvas.

Fly sheets are design especially to protect a horse from flies and other harmful pests where this is a particular problem. The majority of the horse is covered by the fly sheet and there is often a hood attached, covering the neck and head of the animal.

When being kept indoors a stable rug can be worn. Some are thicker and warmer for the winter whilst a light stable rug can protect from flies and pests when the horse is stabled.

A cooler rug, also known as a mantle, is used to prevent a horse from cooling down to quickly. Following a bath or after working when the horse is sweating, draping over a cooler helps keep the horse’s body temperature more steady. This rug is designed for a very precise purpose. i got them these sheets because our barn wasn’t done being built and even though they have shelter in the pasture they stand out in the rain and I don’t want them to be soaking wet in the cold weather

I was just wondering in winter can i put layers underneath those waterproof sheets? so when it snows I can layer them up and they won’t get soaked?

what layers should i get?
i want to get a fleece cooler, could that be a good undersheet?
I just need ideas! Thanks!

Yes, you can layer under waterproof sheets and the bottom layer would stay dry with the waterproof sheet on top.

Fleece, in my opinion, is a great underneath layer. It is light weight and warm.

One of the problems with waterproof sheets is that they don’t “breathe.” While they are keeping water out, they can get overheated (think warm spring rains) and sweat. Then, when the temperature drops at night, they can get a chill.

Using a fleece undersheet will help absorb that sweat and they will stay drier underneath as well.
