Training Young Horses and Horse Trainers
A horse trainer is a term generally used for someone that teaches and improves a horse. Horse trainers specialise in training horses in various equestrian disciplines and also horse behaviour.
Horse trainers have many years experience and even qualifications in their specialist area of horsemanship and know how to achieve the desired results. Whether it’s a racehorse trainer conditioning a Thoroughbred for the flat or a classical dressage trainer teaching a horse the complex and demanding movements of a dressage test, a professional horse trainer will have the knowledge of what is required to teach the horse new skills or improve upon what has already been learnt.
Horses are trained from the moment they are born. Their initial training begins with being handled by humans and learning what is acceptable behaviour and what isn’t. From this training we hope to create a horse that is safe around humans and ready for us to then train in specific areas, such as harness driving, dressage, jumping, or endurance. Even a horse that is simply going to be a happy hacker requires training.
A horse trainer might describe someone who specialise in other areas such as clicker training or western riding. There are also trainers who specialise in natural horse training, these people use training methods that are considered a more natural approach, such as Parelli or Monty Roberts Join-Up.
There are specialists horse trainers all over the UK offering professional services and who know how to improve your horse, whether it’s a ridden or behavioural problem, training in a specific discipline, young horse training or racehorse rehabilitation, there is someone who knows how to get your horse reaching its full potential.

Who do you look up to in the horse world?
Any trainers or competitors that you really admire and respect? What horse person has been your biggest inspiration?
For me it’s a man named John Richard Young. He was a trainer back in the 50s and 60s. He’s died since then but he wrote a book titled “The Schooling of the Western Horse” that is practically my bible. Every single thing he said I agree with 110%. He was a genius and was years ahead of his time. He advocated things back then that are still considered “new” ideas now. He advocates for well rounded, well schooled horses that don’t need gadgets to get a job done. Most of his training techniques (even for western riding) are all about using dressage fundamentals and common sense.
If you ever want a good read, go find once of his books. He’s awesome and I often find myself thinking “What would John Young do?”

I look up to my hunter/speed trainer. She’s probably the coolest woman I’ve ever met. I love her to death, and she’s like a second mom to me. She’s a chain smoking, semi-alcoholic with two young kids and a ton of step-sons who are complete dick wads.
She runs (by runs, I mean does all the labor herself) a 40+ horse facility that she somehow managed to buy in a very expensive area. (I think she might have inherited the money, but not entirely sure). Her husband is a cattle/vegetable farmer up the road from her, so I’m not entirely sure how this all works 
They’re the definition of hicks, but I love them more for it.
She’s a vet-tech drop out, but knows more about horses than most vets I know. She sells feed and it a nutrition consultant. She runs a petting zoo/pony ride thing. As for students, she selects them. People ask her for lessons all the time, but if she doesn’t think you’re worth her time (which she rarely has) then she won’t train you. Her lessons are normally $65 an hour, leases are $400 a month not including lessons. I got free lessons for a year and she GAVE me her top horse (I put him in retirement when I started looking for a younger horse).
I’ve never had a trainer so hard @ss as her. She would make you do things over and over and over again until it was perfect….and then she’d make you do it some more. I’ve never learned so much in my 15 years of riding than with my year with her. She found Luna for me and we’ll be taking lessons with her from time to time. I might move Luna there this Spring, as it’s closer to my campus, so I will get to go see her to and from school.
Anyways..I don’t know where this is going…lol
I don’t really have that many people I look up to in the equestrian world, at least anyone famous.
